African-American Belly Wrapping WorkshopTaught by Shafia MonroeThe African American Perinatal Belly Wrapping Workshop is a highly interactive, culturally grounded training created by Shafia Monroe, and is a program of the SMC Full Circle Doula Birth Companion Training, LLC. Rooted in ancestral African American midwifery and postpartum traditions and rituals, this workshop teaches the healing art of belly wrapping using African cotton cloth&mdash;an evolution from the burlap cloth historically used by 20th-century African American midwives (granny midwives). Designed for birth workers, parents, midwives, wise-woman, healers, doulas, and caregivers, the workshop provides a comprehensive understanding of traditional wrapping as a vital component of perinatal care, with special emphasis on postpartum healing and emotional support.
