The Future Self Foundation is working to create a permanent community center in Cypress Hills/East New York for young people and families who need more than temporary help. We want to create a place where someone can walk through the door during one of the hardest periods of their life and find people willing to help them figure out what comes next.Our center will serve youth impacted by incarceration and returning home, young people in foster care and group homes, pregnant and parenting teens, single mothers experiencing homelessness, families living in shelters, and underserved youth throughout our community.We want young people returning from detention or incarceration to have help with reentry, education, employment, job readiness, mentorship and learning how to rebuild their lives. We want youth aging out of foster care or living in group homes to have somewhere they can build relationships, learn life and financial skills, explore careers and prepare for adulthood.For pregnant and parenting teens and single mothers experiencing homelessness, we want to provide access to parenting support, baby essentials, hygiene and personal-care products, education and employment resources, workshops and connections to services that can help them move toward stability and independence.The center will also be a home for Beauty Through Adversity&trade;, our initiative providing quality hygiene, hair care, skincare, menstrual care and other personal-care essentials to people experiencing hardship, and The Next Chapter Project, which will provide books and educational resources focused on resilience, financial literacy, entrepreneurship and personal development.We envision classrooms and workshops, a computer and career-resource area, mentorship programs, community meetings, book events, financial-literacy and entrepreneurship education, family programming, reentry support, product and resource distributions, and a safe place for young people to be seen, heard and supported.I know personally what it means to need help while trying to build a different future. At 22, I was living in a Bronx shelter with my two-year-old son.
