Spokane Parks and Recreation Outdoor Program is excited to guide you on an adventure filled with lots of winter fun! We will be snowshoeing on designated trails in Mount Spokane State Park where we will practice the various skills of snowshoeing. We will hike approximately 2-3 miles on a moderate slope. Maximum elevation gain will be approximately 600’. There are many trails at Mount Spokane State Park, but we will be using either Trail 131 to Bald Knob Campground or the Lower Mount Kit Carson Trails in and around Smith Gap. That’s why the snowshoeing conditions are so good there! Classes are rarely cancelled due to weather, so bring adequate clothing to remain comfortable. Check out our recommendations below. If a cancellation does occur our office will be in contact with you, using the information you provided during registration (email/phone number). <hr /> Clothing & Equipment:There will be no place to change so come prepared and dressed to snowshoe.****We want to avoid wearing cotton at all costs. This means NO JEANS. It feels like ice against your skin when you perspire or become wet leading to a very cold, miserable time. ****Weather conditions are not always predictable, even on the morning of the trip. Therefore, come fully prepared with the option of determining at the trailhead what to wear. Following these guidelines will greatly enhance your adventure. What to Wear / Bring:Bring along plenty of clothing to keep you warm and dry. Dress with the layering system for the most comfort. The layers allow you to adjust your clothing for the level of your activity.  Base Layer: Start with an underwear layer. The best materials (polypropylene, polyester) will transport moisture away from your skin. Insulating Layer: The next layer provides insulation, which traps the warm air near your body. Down, wool, and polyester fabrics all work well, while cotton and denim do not. Shell Layer: The outer layer provides wind and water protection. It will preferably have a hood, cuffs that close, drawstrings and material that repels water and wind. Avoid heavy insulated parkas, which are usually too warm for snowshoeing.<ul><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Warm Boots suitable for walking in the snow, such as waterproof hiking boots, Sorrels or snowmobile boots with warm liners. Soft lightweight hiking shoes aren’t warm or waterproof enough for our trips.</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Socks Wool or Synthetic. Be sure your socks fit with the boots you are wearing to snowshoe.</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Long Underwear (top and bottom) -This is the layer next to your skin. Synthetic or Wool (avoid cotton- it's like ice when you perspire).</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Stocking Hat Much of your body heat will escape from your head. A hat that covers your ears will be the most effective in conserving body heat.</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Gloves or Mittens (2 pair)-Bring an extra pair because your hands may get wet.</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Insulating Jacket Insulating layer that goes over your long underwear. For times when you are inactive or cold or just simply need additional warmth. Down, Fleece, Wool, or Synthetic materials are best.</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Pants Synthetic, exercise tights, knickers, wool pants (Avoid cotton [jeans])</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Rain Gear Jacket & Pants. If it is snowing or raining or if the trees are dripping from above, rain gear will keep your clothing layers dry.</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Food and Water Don’t go overboard but bring enough to keep you energized and hydrated along the way and for the ride home.</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Day Pack to carry everything in. </li></ul>Optional Things to Bring: <ul><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Gaiters These wrap around your lower leg to cover the gap between your pant leg and boot. They are lightweight, durable and easy to use, and adjustable to almost any boot size. This is where non-cotton clothing is literally a lifesaver. Wearing cotton or other moisture-retaining fabrics puts you at risk for serious heat loss. Any moisture that remains in your clothing quickly conducts body heat straight to the atmosphere. This means your active clothing must not retain perspiration; instead, it must quickly transfer body moisture to your outermost layer, where it can evaporate. The key is to wear layers made of synthetic, quick-drying material that helps evaporate your sweat. That way, your clothes aren’t wet enough to transfer a significant amount of heat away from your body.The advantage to layering, of course, is that when working hard and starting to overheat, you can simply take off an insulating layer (usually a fleece jacket or vest), replace your windproof shell, and you’re on your way. Designed for beginners, within this Snowshoeing trip we will discover the winter beauty of Mt. Spokane on a guided snowshoeing adventure that brings people together to connect with nature and community. Designed to promote environmental awareness and address the nature gap, this event provides an opportunity for everyone—especially those new to outdoor experiences—to enjoy the mountains, foster a love for conservation, and share a meaningful outdoor journey.Ages 8+ | Participants under 18 must have signed permission from a guardian. Meeting Location @ Northtown Mall at 8:45AM Snowshoes and trekking poles will be provided.
