In the bleak wintertime, new hope arrives around the first of February. In some parts of the Northern Hemisphere the buds have begun to swell on the trees, birdsong pierces the deafening silence of the cold still air, and the light is stronger. Yes, these first signs of spring herald a new day when there is hope for climbing out of the hard freeze that has trapped the earth. This time has been traditionally celebrated as Imbolc to honor the goddess and Saint, Brigid Like the earth is fertile, but life has not emerged, yet we are filled with great potential, ourselves. It represents the hope that winter won’t last forever and watching the first signs of the budding life reminds us that in dark times when we, too, feel frozen like the earth is, we still have things inside of us that are bright and alive.  The origins of Brigid's Cross can be traced back to pre-Christian Ireland and the ancient festival of Imbolc where communities would gather to honor Brigid with songs, dances, and offerings. Brigid's Crosses were intricately woven from rushes and sometimes straw, consisting of a central square surrounded by four arms at right angles. The cross would adorn the doors and rafters of Irish homes, usually in the kitchen, warding off fire and evil.  The process of making the cross is often a communal activity, with family members or neighbors coming together to craft the symbol in fellowship. This St. Brigid's Day join the Beaver Island Irish Heritage Group (BIIHG), in partnership with the BIC Center and sponsor, Island Airways for an uplifting celebration of St. Brigid, Imbolc and the return of the light.  Schedule February 1, 2025: 12.00pm - 2pm St. Brigid's Cross Making Workshop with Cindy Gillespie Cushman. Master Gardener in training, Monica Longlet will kick things off by sharing her tips for outdoor winter seed sowing as we reflect on how we can intentionally sow seeds in our own life, both physically and metaphorically; to grow in the coming seasons.  Cindy Gillespie Cushman will teach the art of weaving your own St. Brigid's Cross with rushes from Ireland. Learn about the history and folklore of Imbolc, Brigid: The Goddess and Saint in Ireland, and the legend of the Brat-Bríde or Brigid's Cloak.   Participants will leave with their handmade St. Brigid's Cross, Brat-Bríde and seed packet. The BIC Center will provide complimentary refreshments of tea, coffee, water and snacks. 2pm - 3pm Screening of the documentary film, Finding Brigid.Ireland celebrated its first public holiday dedicated to a woman in 2023. Siobhán McSweeney, of Derry Girls' fame, goes in search of the real St. Brigid in this enchanting and moving short film. Run time: 50 minutes. The showing will take place in the BIC Center Theatre. And because no movie is complete without snacks, we will be providing you with complimentary Irish snacks to enjoy with the movie!  Pre-book here for this event so we know how to prepare. Children are welcome (and encouraged) to participate but must be accompanied by an adult.
