The central problem with the ethic of &quot;less talk, more action&quot; is that human action goes through human communities. There is no non-authoritarian pathway toward justice that does not at some point include bringing people together to talk about hard problems and develop collective solutions. These conversations are extraordinarily challenging, and repeated failures in them lead to organizational breakdown, individual disinvestment, and burnout. It can be easy to conclude that the problem is simply that people are bad, inefficient, or self-absorbed. It is more useful to recognize that communication about things that matter deeply to us is harder than we tend to assume and that most of us have never been given the tools to do it well.&nbsp; Talking Our Way to Justice is a three-hour workshop built around hands-on practice with a facilitation structure designed to do several things that are rarely brought together in justice spaces: build genuine connection across difference, develop the capacity for deep listening, link personal experience to structural conditions, examine how power operates within the group itself, articulate a shared vision for a different future, and develop concrete strategies for moving toward it. Participants will spend most of the session inside the work (i.e., not just learning about the process, but moving through it together) and will leave with both a realistic sense of how the structure works and the practical grounding to use it in their own communities and organizations.&nbsp; Meet the Instructor! Ricky Blissett is the Associate Director of the Center for Democracy and Civic Life at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Both within and outside of their role at UMBC, their research primarily focuses on attitudes and ideologies in the politics of educational equity and justice, as well as the spaces in which public ideologies translate into policy action. Their expertise includes educational politics and governance, ideological politics of race- and gender-conscious policy, and program evaluation and research methodology. Further, they are a dialogue facilitator with training in conflict mediation and multiple models of dialogue, and they build and train others in forms of dialogue that enable civic participation and justice-focused analysis.
