I look forward to seeing you on January 29th at 7pm. A few words of orientation:We will explore Marcus Aureliius’ Meditations. Your books are either ready for pick-up at Theodore’s or on its way to you. I use the book (and others) as the basis of a series of “Resilient Leadership” lectures I present through Cornell University. We offer it to students, activists, government officials and corporate leaders. These sessions combine an exploration of stoicism with meditation and breathing exercises. (More on this during our meeting). If you’ve started reading Meditations for the first time, certain passages can seem perplexing if not incomprehensible. Fear not! The footnotes often provide clarity (some even note that a particular passage was poorly translated or lacks context over the ages). The key to understanding Aurelius is to remember that he was simply writing notes to himself, often in a deeply challenging time, based on his study of stoicism. Some make sense, others don’t. Some may have meaning to you, others will have greater resonance with another reader. My advice: Get the gist… mark specific passages that you hope to explore in our conversation.
