This workshop will focus on integrating EMDR therapy into the treatment of grief and mourning. The death of a loved one can be a time of unparalleled distress and adaptation to the loss can be very challenging. Even when uncomplicated, bereavement can have a significant psychological, behavioral, social, physical, and economic impact. EMDR therapy can be integrated into treatment of grief and mourning to process the distressing memories and present trigger that complicate the bereavement and enable the mourner to assimilate and accommodate the loss. In brief, the loss of connection that comes with the loss of a loved one can be traumatic. EMDR therapy can reprocess the trauma of the loss, and enable the linking in of adaptive information. Usually, the adaptive information is the experience of positive, heartfelt, meaningful moments and memories that give the mourner a sense of connection (an adaptive inner representation). Hence, there is a transformation of the connection from loving in presence (when the loved one was alive) to loving in absence (now that the loved one is deceased). However, the memories of the deceased may not be good ones (e.g. the person who dies is the person responsible for abuse/neglect). The negative memories (including early childhood attachment based experiences), past traumas, and unresolved losses can complicate the mourning process and block EMDR processing. Hence, such memories need to identified and reprocessed. Attachment theory increases our understanding of complicated grief and mourning and explains individual differences. Research has shown that attachment style is an important determinant of how one grieves. The loss of a significant person in adulthood can evoke many of the same feelings and responses that accompanied separation from an attachment figure during childhood (Kosminsky &amp; Jordan, 2016). Consequently, &nbsp;understanding attachment theory can guide the EMDR clinician in identification and treatment of the maladaptively stored information complicating the grief. Significant attachment trauma may lead to dissociation, in which the personality divides into parts: some are oriented to everyday life (Apparently Normal Part[s] or ANP) while others remain fixated in the traumatic experience, reliving and reenacting it as if it were still occurring (Emotional Parts or EPs. Because attachment trauma can occur before the development of language, these traumaholding parts may be experienced as very young&mdash;sometimes as infants&mdash;organized around implicit sensory, emotional, and bodily memory rather than verbal narrative. In such cases, it is important to work with the whole personality system, with the goal of cooperation and collaboration among the parts with adult (ANP) leadership. &nbsp;This presentation will discuss grief and mourning, the processes the mourner has to go through for adaptive assimilation and accommodation of the loss, factors that can complicate bereavement, and how EMDR can be integrated into an overall treatment plan. Attachment theory and other models of grief will be presented that can inform EMDR therapy. Particular emphasis will be on working with preverbal trauma.
