Blending fervid choral writing spanning centuries of technique with angular and often violent instrumentation, MacMillan&rsquo;s score plumbs the emotional depths of Jacopone da Todi&rsquo;s 13th century Marian lamentation in a way few other settings have. Dedicated to John Studzinski and the Genesis Foundation, Stabat Mater received its US premiere in 2019, but (perhaps due to the myriad challenges it presents to choristers) has received few performances outside of Europe to date. According to Artistic Director, Virgil Bozeman IV, &ldquo;this is a state of affairs that we are excited to help rectify.&rdquo; Joined by seventeen of the area&rsquo;s finest instrumentalists, UVCC will give this magnificent work its New England premiere in the superior acoustical setting of Studzinski Hall on the campus of Bowdoin College.
