(Un)accompanied combines interesting and delightful a cappella works with compositions supported by rich and virtuosic piano accompaniments, creating two halves that are emotionally and texturally distinct, but unified by counterpoint, invention, and a throughline of references to great works from the Classical tradition. Two sets of pieces by the Tennessee-based composer John Wykoff (Inventions for Choir, and Inventions for Choir and Piano) anchor each half of the program, which is rounded out with works by some of America’s finest contemporary choral composers, including Joan Szymko, Shara Nova, Dominick DiOrio, and Jake Runestad. Standouts among these include Joan Szymko’s Invitation to the Dance, a rhythmically driven and delightfully earthly setting of three poems by Hafiz, and Jake Runestad’s A Silence Haunts me, a profoundly moving treatment of Ludwig van Beethoven’s heart-wrenching Heiligenstadt Testament.
