A Conversation Inspired by Hochman &amp; Duffy&#39;s Effective Writing Instruction (2015)Duration: 60 Minutes | Format: Virtual Coffee ChatAbout This SessionAre your students assigned writing &mdash; but not actually taught how to write? You&#39;re not alone. Join us for a relaxed, conversational coffee chat as we dig into Judith Hochman and Bridget MacDermott-Duffy&#39;s thought-provoking article, Effective Writing Instruction, and explore what it really means to teach writing well. Many schools assign writing but do not teach it explicitly &mdash; and this article makes a compelling case for why that has to change. The Hochman Method offers a clear, coherent, evidence-based instructional approach suitable for any subject or grade level. By learning and practicing TWR strategies through scaffolded activities, students improve their reading comprehension, oral expression, and critical thinking. Recognizing that writing is challenging for both students and teachers, the method emphasizes the need for explicit instruction and deliberate practice. This informal conversation is your chance to connect with fellow educators, share your experiences, and think together about what writing instruction could look like in your classroom or school. What We&#39;ll Explore Together<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><img alt="📌" src="https://fonts.gstatic.com/s/e/notoemoji/17.0/1f4cc/72.png" fr-original-style="" fr-original-class="fr-draggable" style="cursor: pointer; padding: 0px 1px; user-select: none; max-width: 100%; position: relative; box-sizing: inherit;"> Why writing instruction is often fragmented &mdash; and what the research says about the cost to students</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><img alt="✏️" src="https://fonts.gstatic.com/s/e/notoemoji/17.0/270f_fe0f/72.png" fr-original-style="" fr-original-class="fr-draggable" style="cursor: pointer; padding: 0px 1px; user-select: none; max-width: 100%; position: relative; box-sizing: inherit;"> The power of starting small: The method starts with explicit instruction at the sentence level, building up to paragraphs and full compositions.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><img alt="🔗" src="https://fonts.gstatic.com/s/e/notoemoji/17.0/1f517/72.png" fr-original-style="" fr-original-class="fr-draggable" style="cursor: pointer; padding: 0px 1px; user-select: none; max-width: 100%; position: relative; box-sizing: inherit;"> Writing as a cross-curricular tool: The Writing Revolution isn&#39;t a separate curriculum; instead, it integrates seamlessly into existing curricula, providing strategies and activities that can be woven into content instruction.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><img alt="🧠" src="https://fonts.gstatic.com/s/e/notoemoji/17.0/1f9e0/72.png" fr-original-style="" fr-original-class="fr-draggable" style="cursor: pointer; padding: 0px 1px; user-select: none; max-width: 100%; position: relative; box-sizing: inherit;"> The bigger payoff: The method improves students&#39; writing, reading comprehension, oral expression, and analytical thinking.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><img alt="🌍" src="https://fonts.gstatic.com/s/e/notoemoji/17.0/1f30d/72.png" fr-original-style="" fr-original-class="fr-draggable" style="cursor: pointer; padding: 0px 1px; user-select: none; max-width: 100%; position: relative; box-sizing: inherit;"> Equity in the classroom: The approach is especially effective for struggling writers and English language learners.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><img alt="💬" src="https://fonts.gstatic.com/s/e/notoemoji/17.0/1f4ac/72.png" fr-original-style="" fr-original-class="fr-draggable" style="cursor: pointer; padding: 0px 1px; user-select: none; max-width: 100%; position: relative; box-sizing: inherit;"> What this looks like in your practice &mdash; a chance to share wins, challenges, and questions</li></ul>Who Should Attend? This session is open to all educators &mdash; classroom teachers, instructional coaches, curriculum leaders, and administrators &mdash; across all grade levels and subject areas.
