Participants are invited to attend either the full day of workshops, or one of their choosing. 10AM-Noon: Workshop 1- In Plain SightWhat places tell your community&rsquo;s story?Not every important historic place looks like a grand mansion or famous landmark. In Plain Sight explores the overlooked buildings, gathering places, cultural landscapes, and everyday spaces that hold the histories of women and underrepresented communities.Join Lena S. McDonald to explore how we decide what is &ldquo;worthy&rdquo; of preservation&mdash;and how communities can help identify the places and stories that matter. Noon-1PM Lunch 1PM - 3PM Workshop 2 - History is EverywhereWhose history gets remembered? And whose stories have been left out?Across our communities are places that have been important to generations of people but may never have received a historical marker, appeared in a museum exhibition, or made it into the history books. Churches, businesses, clubs, gathering places, neighborhoods, schools, recreational spaces, and other community institutions can hold rich histories that are easy to overlook&mdash;particularly when the people who used them have themselves been underrepresented in traditional historical narratives. Led by Lena S. McDonald, this practical workshop is ideal for both historians and genealogists and will introduce participants to the tools and approaches used to research local places and the communities connected to them. We&#39;ll explore how to find historical evidence when the official record is incomplete&mdash;and how to recognize the people, memories, objects, and places that can help fill in the gaps.
