Emily Stevens, OTR, MOT, CSRS, UTHealth Houston, Institute for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases

Learner Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Describe 4-5 possible interventions to increase the function of the neurologically

impaired upper extremity

2. Understand the current evidence supporting the timing and dosage of possible upper

extremity interventions

3. Evaluate the possible upper extremity interventions and select appropriate options for

various client scenarios

4. Identify key steps in the clinical decision making process for upper extremity intervention

after neurological injury

Outline of Program Content

During this introductory course, participants will learn about the current evidence for various

upper extremity interventions to promote recovery after a neurological injury, including massed

practice, priming, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, mirror visual feedback, biofeedback,

robotics, bilateral interventions, and constraint-induced movement therapy.  Participants will

review and discuss the clinical relevance of these interventions for different client scenarios and

discuss the clinician’s perspective on the logistics and applicability of these interventions in daily

occupational therapy practice.
