The Fred Gray Association was a loose confederation of young men... anxious to explore male-male affection" who gathered nightly at Pfaff's, including Walt Whitman. Named after member Fred Gray--whom Whitman deeply admired--the Association acted as a sly, coded identity; a 19th-century precursor to being a "Friend of Dorothy." It was a quiet act of subversion: a social underground where same-sex love flourished beneath the rigid sidewalks of Manhattan. While these men likely never wore formal insignia, our die-cast metal button imagines the secret badge of a society that dared to 'adhere' to one another. Pfaff's remains one of the earliest known sites of queer visibility in New York history.
