Working with Family Member Conflict in the Suites A Direct Care Training Workshop with Courtney Smith If you have spent any time in the Sanctuary Suites, you have seen big emotions from family members. Our human response to death arrives in many forms, and in direct care we meet all of them. Anger. Frustration. The need for control. Old family patterns surfacing at the threshold. None of it is a problem to be solved. Most of it is grief looking for somewhere to go. Every day we practice ways to embrace death and support one another with loving presence. This workshop is that practice, brought to the hardest moments in the Suites. It asks for deep listening, wholehearted acceptance, and the willingness to stay curious when a room gets loud. This is a practice-focused workshop. Together we will explore coherence, co-regulation, and Nonviolent Communication techniques that can support you at the bedside. Then we will spend real time working with actual scenarios drawn from the Suites over the years, so you can try the strategies on before you need them. Scenarios we may work with:<ul fr-original-style="text-align: start;" style="text-align: start; box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Family members want to fill a resident&#39;s room while the resident wants to rest</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Cultural beliefs about death, dying, or care for the body that conflict with family or volunteers</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Conversations about VSED, or Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking</li></ul>You will leave with strategies for meeting conflict, anger, frustration, control, family dynamics, and the many other ways grief shows up in the people who love our residents. Your host. Courtney Smith started her career as a music therapist in the realms of both birth and death. Those early experiences, along with her work as a Certified Nurse Assistant, hospice volunteer, and trained death doula, and a career of more than twenty years in social services, have imprinted upon her the sacredness of the entire life cycle and the importance of community. Courtney is supported by her lifelong practices of meditation, Kundalini yoga, shamanic studies, and ancestry work. She currently facilitates and supports the emergence of Emberlight through strategic planning, fundraising, and organizational development. Where we will meet.
