Help Build the Path from Rescue to Home Every rescue dog deserves a safe place to land. Somewhere to rest after transport, receive care, recover, and begin to feel safe. Somewhere that gives them a chance to find their people. The Millie Project is raising $250,000 to launch the first phase of a new Rescue & Adoption Center in Whatcom County. This campaign is the beginning of a $1 million, three-year vision to expand rescue capacity, strengthen local partnerships, and help more dogs find loving homes. Why this space matters For many rescue organizations, the ability to save a dog comes down to available space. When foster homes are full, even a dedicated rescue team may have nowhere for the next dog to go. Our proposed center would help fill that gap with dedicated space for intake, quarantine, recovery, and temporary care. Dogs could receive appropriate medical attention and time to decompress before moving into foster homes or meeting potential adopters. We want to build a resource that supports the shelters, foster-based rescues, volunteers, and community partners already doing this work. Building on what’s already working At Are You My Human? Rescue Dog Lounge in Bellingham, we see what happens when rescue dogs have the opportunity to connect with people. The lounge has supported more than 200 adoptions in 2026, helping dogs from partner rescues build confidence and meet potential families. The Millie Project’s new center would support the care that comes before those introductions, creating a stronger path from rescue to adoption through the lounge and other adoption opportunities. Riley’s story shows why that matters. Rescued from the streets of California’s Central Valley, he arrived severely matted, underweight, and afraid of people. Our rescue partner provided veterinary treatment, vaccinations, neutering, and a much-needed groom. At the lounge, he spent four days a week learning to trust again. After a few weeks, a wonderful couple adopted him. Today, Riley is living a happy life here in Whatcom County. We want to make that kind of new beginning possible for more dogs. Where your support will go Our $250,000 first-year goal includes:

$85,000 for facility and kennels

$75,000 for safe care infrastructure

$20,000 for rescue operations

$45,000 for people and programs

$25,000 for a responsible start

This is a phased plan: $250,000 to build and launch in Year One, $350,000 to expand in Year Two, and $400,000 to strengthen the program in Year Three. These are fundraising goals and planned investments, not funds already raised. As the program grows, we also envision opportunities for volunteering, education, pet-resource support, and accessible experiences with rescue animals for people throughout our community. Help us build what comes next Your donation supports the work of creating more space for dogs to recover, feel safe, and prepare for a home. Leadership gifts, business partnerships, equipment, in-kind contributions, and introductions to potential supporters can all help move this vision forward. Donations through this campaign support The Millie Project, our 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The proposed rescue center is a nonprofit initiative, distinct from the operations of Are You My Human? Rescue Dog Lounge.
