Everyday Is Black History · 8th Annual · Saturday, August 16, 2026 · 1–6pmJasper P. Driver Plaza · North OaklandFor eight years, Self Help Hunger Program has gathered North Oakland on one Saturday to embody what Black history actually is: show up for each other, in person, with food on the table and music in the air. This year, we're dedicating the day to our neighbors coming home from incarceration. The theme is Building Beyond the Bars — because freedom isn't a gate that opens, it's a community that catches you. What to expect:

A hot meal for every neighbor who walks up — no questions asked

Live performers from the community, with Atmospheric Funk and Celestial headlining

A resource fair for folks navigating reentry — housing, work, ID, a phone that works, a hand to hold

Face painting and programming for the kids

Inspiring Speakers

JustTouch - Trauma relief through massage therapy

Alameda County is covering $10,000 of the day through the AB 109 Community Outreach grant. We need to raise the remaining $5,000 from our community — the people who keep this work alive year after year.Whether you can come on August 16 or support from afar, your gift funds the meal, the music, the tents, the welcome. Every dollar is a seat at the table for a returning neighbor. We don't just feed the homeless — we feed the Hungry. Come hungry. Come home.
