No preguntes.)

TL;DR: I helped grow Windy City ToolBank from 47 orders in all of 2025 to 217 so far in 2026. With one full-time employee. Me. We finally have two amazing part-time staffers, and I need your help raising $10,000 to keep them through December. Well, this is awkward. Windy City ToolBank is doing better than ever! But I still need your help. In all of 2025, we supported 47 equipment orders and 77 community projects. So far in 2026? 217 orders and 504 projects. We've supported more than 6,300 volunteers doing incredible things across Chicago, lending everything from power tools and wheelbarrows to tents, tables, sound systems, and some things you probably wouldn't believe we own. (Yes, we have silent disco headphones. And a dog treadmill. Don't ask.) In fact, the retail value of equipment we've loaned this year has already topped $637,000. And those numbers don't even include the orders currently out in the community that haven't been returned yet. Pretty incredible, right? You know what's less incredible? Trying to run all of that with one full-time employee. Hi. That's me. I'm the employee. I started volunteering full-time in October 2024 and became Executive Director in February 2025. I've poured everything I have into helping build this organization because I genuinely believe in what we do. And it's working. Honestly, alarmingly well. The problem is that our impact has grown exponentially, while our ability to pay people has not. For a long time, I've been the person answering emails, coordinating orders, managing inventory, working with partners, moving equipment, chasing funding, and occasionally remembering that I am, in fact, a human being who should probably go home. Turns out, enthusiasm is not a sustainable staffing model. Who knew? This summer, through Chicago's youth employment programs, we finally got some help. And two of those incredible people, Julia and Néstor, have become essential to keeping this place running. Here's what having them around has meant. For the first time, I could actually take a vacation. I could attend events hosted by our member organizations instead of just sending equipment out the door and hoping someone would send pictures. I could meet with potential funders, build partnerships, and spend more time with the incredible people doing good across this beautiful city. You know, the things an Executive Director is supposed to be doing. Turns out, having other humans around is pretty useful. Our board saw their value and approved an extension of their positions while we pursued funding to keep them. We genuinely believed we'd have that funding figured out by the end of October. We don't. And now, just as we've gotten a glimpse of what this organization can accomplish with an actual team, we're facing the possibility of losing them. We need $10,000 to keep Julia and Néstor working part-time through at least December 31. That gives me time to pursue longer-term funding and build a sustainable staffing plan. It also gives them some certainty and time to explore their own options if we can't make that happen. Because they deserve that. Here's the thing about the ToolBank. When we lend a nonprofit 20 shovels, we don't lose 20 shovels. They come back, and another organization gets to use them. And another. And another. That's the beauty of shared resources. The same equipment keeps creating opportunities for more people to do good. But the humans who make that happen? Their time and energy aren't infinitely reusable. The tools are reusable. The humans are not. We're not asking you to rescue a failing organization. We're asking you to help sustain one that's growing faster than we ever imagined. If you've borrowed from us, volunteered with us, partnered with us, or simply believe that community organizations deserve access to the resources they need, I hope you'll consider making a donation. We've built something extraordinary here. I just can't keep building it alone. Help us raise $10,000 to keep the humans behind the tools. With enormous gratitude,Jess Executive Director, Windy City ToolBank Impact figures reflect completed orders recorded through October 2026. Orders still in progress are not included.
