Our Mission: Learning, Creating, and Connecting Through Capoeira in Brazil Help Us Take Baltimore Students to Brazil in Summer 2027In the summer of 2027, Capoeira Social Project hopes to take up to five Baltimore City high school students to Brazil for an immersive cultural and educational experience centered on capoeira, Afro-Brazilian culture, the arts, and community. For these students, this journey will be about much more than traveling to another country. It will be an opportunity to step outside of their everyday environment, experience another culture firsthand, develop new skills, and build connections with young people and artists in Brazil. Through capoeira, music, dance, percussion, visual arts, food, and cultural exchange, students will learn about the history and living traditions of the African Diaspora while developing confidence, creativity, leadership, and a greater sense of their place in the world. Learning Through ExperienceOur students will travel with their teacher and Capoeira Social Project instructor, Professor Siriguejo, and participate in educational and cultural activities in multiple regions of Brazil. Our planned destinations include Recife and Olinda in Pernambuco and Belo Horizonte in Minas Gerais. Students will participate in capoeira classes and rodas, percussion and dance workshops, youth programs, school visits, artistic exchanges, culinary experiences, and community activities. They will have opportunities to learn directly from Brazilian teachers, artists, students, and community organizations while also sharing their own experiences as young people from Baltimore. In Recife and Olinda, students will explore the rich cultural traditions of Pernambuco, including capoeira and other Afro-Brazilian and northeastern Brazilian forms of music, dance, and popular culture. Olinda's historic streets and vibrant artistic traditions provide a unique setting for students to experience the connections between history, community, music, and cultural expression. Our time in Belo Horizonte and Minas Gerais will provide another perspective on Brazilian culture and history. Through workshops, school visits, capoeira activities, and community exchanges, students will have the opportunity to learn about the traditions of Minas Gerais while developing relationships with Brazilian youth and cultural practitioners. Building Skills Beyond the ClassroomThis experience is designed to complement the students' education rather than simply serve as a vacation. Depending on their interests and career pathways, students may document the journey through photography and video, participate in music and dance, explore Brazilian cuisine, assist with youth programming, or contribute to other artistic and educational projects. They will be encouraged to learn, create, contribute, and lead throughout the experience. We also want students to understand that cultural exchange is a two-way process. They will not simply travel to Brazil as visitors. They will represent their school, their families, Baltimore, and Capoeira Social Project while building relationships with the communities they visit. Their goal will be to approach each experience with curiosity, humility, respect, and a willingness to contribute. Bringing Brazil Back to BaltimoreThe impact of this trip will not end when the students return home. After the journey, students will have opportunities to share their experiences with their peers and the wider Baltimore community through presentations, performances, workshops, photography, video, and other creative projects. What they learn in Brazil can become a resource for other young people who may never have the opportunity to travel internationally themselves. Our hope is to create a cycle of learning:Baltimore → Brazil → BaltimoreStudents travel to Brazil to learn from its people and culture, and then return home ready to share that knowledge, creativity, and inspiration with others. Help Us Make This PossibleInternational travel is financially out of reach for many of the young people we serve. Your donation can help remove that barrier. Funds raised through this campaign will help cover airfare, lodging, meals, local transportation, educational activities, workshops, and other travel-related expenses for up to five students. Every contribution brings us one step closer to giving these young people an experience that can expand their understanding of the world and their understanding of themselves. This is more than a trip to Brazil. It is an investment in young people, cultural education, leadership, the arts, and connections across the African Diaspora. With your support, we can help Baltimore students see the world, experience culture firsthand, develop new skills, and return home with something valuable to share.Thank you for believing in our students and in the power of education, culture, and connection. Axé and gratitude!
