Each participant will collect local plant materials, creating and bringing home two handmade cyanotype prints, as well as creating one large canvas print as a group. This workshop shifts the practice away from the individual and towards relationship with place, process, and collective creativity through printmaking. Beyond the physical artwork, the workshop encourages participants to reflect on the ethics of gathering, making, and being in place together in unceded Tsimshian territory. This workshop hopes to foster thinking and conversation about how we, as settlers, and guests, can tread lightly and intentionally in relation to Indigenous territories and more-than-human kin. This workshop is accessible for participants of all ages. What is cyanotype?Cyanotype is a historic photographic process, created in the 1840s, which uses UV light (sunlight) chemistry to produce photographic film negatives, which turn to deep blue prints. Like many Western art forms, cyanotype was historically tied to scientific cataloguing of plants and colonial documentation of land and “discovery”. • • ABOUT KERRY GIBSON Kerry Gibson (she/they) MLa, MACP (in progress) is a multidisciplinary artist, treeplanter, and therapist-in-training based in Ts'msyen territory / Terrace, BC. With roots in landscape architecture, somatic therapy, and visual art, their work explores connections between land, identity, and community. Inspired by Donna Haraway’s “Staying with the Trouble”, Kerry’s art workshops invite inquisitiveness, questioning, and a process of becoming more comfortable with difficult questions surrounding settler privilege, legacy, and responsibility. A settler of Celtic and Dutch ancestry, she draws on the warmest and wisest parts of her lineage in all that she does.
