As Comida de Vida/Food of Life Pantry enters our fifteenth year we have been able to provide our neighbors with the healthy food they need not just to survive, but to thrive. That amazing feat is made possible because of you! When someone visits our pantry, they receive three days’ worth of groceries for every family member. Based on our most recent Friday menu, that amount of food, at a local supermarket, would cost $153! We pride ourselves on providing locally grown organic produce packed with nutrition. The produce comes from both our own Giving Garden (where an impressive 4000 pounds were harvested in 2023) and through partnerships with local farms and grocery stores. We are able to store and safely distribute food thanks to our Harvest House, a one-room, temperature-controlled storage building and a large walk-in outdoor refrigerator. So far in 2024, the Giving Garden has produced 1,200 pounds of produce; we’ve welcomed 10,061 neighbors to our Friday distributions; and neighbors are using raised beds in Jean’s Garden to grow their own healthy food. Additionally, we’re in the process of adding management of the Dover Plains “La Mesa” food distribution site to our operations after its leader suffered a health crisis. This year Comida de Vida/Food of Life faces new challenges. Food costs have risen dramatically and some of our long term and most reliable funders have been forced to reduce grant awards. Despite these challenges, we continue to provide food to an average of 110 families each week. We have never turned anyone away! None of the pantry’s work would be possible without the support of dedicated, caring people like you.
