We are working on the 11th of our 14-field goal for 2025!(every $3000 dollars pays for the extra nutrients that improve the soil on an average 50 acre grain field). The Problem:The miracle of modern farming (which provides us all with inexpensive, nourishing food), often has the unintended side effect of mining the soil&rsquo;s deep organic matter. Each year this leaves our nation&rsquo;s farmland a little less able to absorb heavy rains and a little more vulnerable to drought&mdash;and on course to threaten our food security! Fertile Soils Fund, with your donations, will step in to show how we can change the direction of American agriculture, one field at a time. The Solution:&nbsp;We use methods proven in field trials by agricultural scientists to mirror the most important regenerative aspects of organic and local farming, increasing deep soil organic matter, even on conventional industrial farms. A big catch is that it costs more for extra nutrients, fewer soybean rotations, and leaving crop residues in place, than farmers can afford&mdash;without help. That is where Fertile Soils Fund, and donors like you, come in!&nbsp;The Science:Every $3000 FSF raises in 2025 will be another 50-acre grain field and partner farmer we can work with (on average, as every field is different). &nbsp;It will buy the small amount of balancing nutrients that soil microbes need to turn a large chunk of that year&rsquo;s crop residue (roots, stems, and leaves) into deep, resistant soil organic carbon instead of decomposing back into the air. &nbsp;Your donation improves the soil that feeds us, and cleans up carbon dioxide pollution! By finding and rewarding partner farmers that were already forgoing efficiencies such as baling residue, but couldn&rsquo;t afford extra nutrients, we are together creating the test cases that will point the way to better agriculture in the US. This would in turn multiply exponentially the impact of your donations, as that kind of proof and track record changes the conversation around farming in the US, and could guide USDA, NRCS, and farm extension policy and services into the future. This scale will also improve the viability of FSF as an organization. From the beginning we&#39;ve been committed to the majority of donated money going right back out the door as nutrients for farm soil, so the small percentages for overhead and program delivery costs leave very little compared to any similar charities. Above $120,000 a year, the 20% in program delivery costs that go to our own small staff will become significant for their families (right now in fact that is just one employee, as our board members are required by our charter to be volunteers, and our operations officer is committed to staying a volunteer). If matched with grants that we are already targeting and working on, our budget will then provide that staff with a living wage. This structure and philosophy is the kind of lean, non-profit model most people imagine when they donate their hard-earned money, but unfortunately people are losing faith that this is the default with charities today.
