This beloved park, where we celebrate weddings, learn history, and connect with nature, is missing a vital link &ndash; the staircase. Trees blown over in a winter storm crushed the stairs, blocking access. Sitka Trail Works needs your help to rebuild! We&#39;re bringing together volunteers and professionals to clear the overhanging blowdown and repair the stairs. Every donation helps us restore this important space for our community. This isn&#39;t just any staircase; it&#39;s a series of four flights, over 100 feet long, climbing 52 steps, a route that generations of Sitkans have used. A powerful storm in December 2023 damaged Halibut Point Recreation Area, affectionately known as &quot;the Rec,&quot; and this staircase, connecting the north and south ends of the park, suffered significant damage. This is the route where elementary students once reenacted the Klondike Gold Rush, carrying weighted packs to simulate the challenging Chilkoot Pass. Volunteers will play a crucial role, making this a true community effort.
