Because of my experiences here in the United States, I have felt compelled to accept an invitation to be part of a delegation to the Holy Land this Lent to meet with Palestinian people, listen to their stories and fears, and see first hand what our sisters and brothers have been experiencing so that I can bring that witness back here to the U.S.I know the power of being a witness. I have testified before lawmakers on behalf of my own communities here in Maryland and I have gone to the border with Mexico to be able to see for myself who the refugees and asylum seekers are what the conditions they really face. I have pleaded on television for neighbors to see and help our own neighbors here in the U.S. during the pandemic. Palestinian Christians have made this invitation to me, I cannot ignore their requests for such a simple form of assistance as my presence, my eyes, my ears, and my voice.If you are able, please consider financially helping to make this happen. If you can help, you can make a donation with your credit/debit card or Apple Pay or Google Pay right now.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/hxn9dbuhd/image/upload/v1739593187/q6djgkgz6g24p79mupcs.jpg" style="width:401px;display:block;vertical-align:top;margin:5px auto;text-align:center;position:relative;cursor:pointer;padding:0px 1px;user-select:none;box-sizing:inherit;max-width:100%" />For over a year, throughout the terrible conflict in Israel-Palestine, I have gone again and again to places like the White House and the Capitol to join my voice with many others calling for a ceasefire and peace in Gaza that will allow humanitarian aid to reach everyone in desperate need.During my career as a school principal I was responsible for children as young as 2-years-old and their families. I cannot fathom the suffering and trauma that the children of Gaza have been subject to throughout the bombing, the raids, the destruction of hospitals, and the constant movement in search of safety and shelter. Even now, with hostilities paused, there is hunger, lack of places to sleep and take care of hygiene, schools are gone, and the State of Israel expelled the United Nations Relief Agency, which had been responsible for much of the education and nutrition in Gaza before the brutal retaliation against Hamas began. I have also been to Israel. I have met families at kibbutzim. I have shared Shabbat in Jerusalem. As someone who has been extensively trained to teach about the Holocaust and Anti-Semitism, I understand the desires of Jewish people in Israel and around the world to feel safe and to raise their children in hope. But, I have also been to Auschwitz and the Warsaw Ghetto. My commitment to standing with and raising my voice on behalf of all suffering people has been shaped through conversations with survivors of the Shoah and descendants who have lost entire families. I have stood and prayed with Jewish people and other victims of the Nazi's genocidal actions in places where countless lives were senselessly destroyed. With my own child nearby in her mother's womb, I wept standing in a gas chamber where the parents of many children were killed.Alongside fellow Christians, friends and neighbors, and people of goodwill from many religious traditions, I have sang in the halls of Congress over the last year seeking for those with power to turn their attention to the suffering in Gaza, especially the children. I have prayed with my Franciscan sisters and brothers as our elders have risked arrest in front of the White House on Ash Wednesday to send a message to the President that we feel shame for the blood that is on our hands from the violence perpetrated with U.S. weaponry.In accepting the invitation to be part of this delegation, I am not seeking to be partisan or biased. I simply desire, as Pope Francis has called Catholics to do throughout this conflict, to do what I can in the quest for real peace that I believe all human beings crave. This is why I am going. I humbly ask you to pray for me, send positive thoughts with me and the other delegation members as we meet Palestinians, and do whatever you can to support peace in Israel and Palestine and in the many places around the world facing conflicts and turmoil at this moment.I am grateful to the committed justice seekers and peace advocates at FOSNA and Sabeel for making trips like this possible.
