Rocky Road Rescue exists because dogs in urgent need of help need a safe place to go, and they need people like you to make that possible.Every year, we rescue 70 to 180 dogs who have run out of options due to changing family circumstances, medical needs, shelter transfers, or urgent intake. Each dog who enters our care receives full veterinary support, plus hands-on assessment and training in foster homes so they are healthy, stable, and ready for adoption.We believe in transparency about the real cost of rescue. Typical medical expenses for a single dog often include:Initial veterinary exam: $75 to $250 depending on clinic and urgencyCore vaccines (rabies and DAPP): about $150Spay or neuter surgery: $400 to $1,200 depending on size and clinicDeworming and 4DX testing when needed: about $250Dental work for painful teeth: often $1,000 or moreAdditional treatment if required, such as Lyme disease care ($150 to $400) or lump removals ($1,000 or more)Our adoption fees, at their highest, are usually around $750 to $950. Senior dogs and higher needs dogs often have reduced fees ranging from $100 to $750, and in some palliative or ongoing medical cases, fees may be waived entirely so the right home can be found.In many cases, the adoption fee does not come close to covering the full cost of care.We cannot continue saying yes to dogs who need us without your support. Arlo’s Healing Fund 💙🐾 Meet Arlo. This big man was what we call an 11th-hour save. He was dangerously close to euthanasia when the Rocky Road Rescue team stepped in and scooped him up just in time.Since then, Arlo has shown us exactly what it means to be a shining light, even while facing some incredibly difficult medical challenges.Arlo has hypothyroidism, which can affect his ability to heal, make him more susceptible to infection, and can have difficulty regulating body temperature. His heat intolerance has been especially challenging during this weather, and getting his condition properly managed with this diagnosis has added another layer of complexity to his recovery.He also has rapidly growing polyps in both ears. They have created significant blockages that are too extensive for our regular veterinary team to operate on safely, so Arlo will need to see a specialist for further treatment. With his ears unable to drain normally and his increased tendency toward infection, it has created a perfect storm, and he has really been struggling.As if that weren’t enough (yes, there's more), Arlo has an abscess on the side of his neck that drains into his ear, causing even more discomfort and complications.So far, Arlo has required an emergency veterinary visit, numerous follow-up appointments, testing, and several medications. Our veterinary team has found a care regimen that is helping keep him comfortable while we wait for results that will determine the next steps for his long-term care and surgical treatment.Through it all, Arlo’s incredible foster has been an absolute rockstar. Every day, she provides: 🐾 Multiple ear cleanings to manage the drainage 🐾 Warm compresses several times a day to prevent the abscess from worsening 🐾 Numerous medications to keep him comfortable and help him heal 🐾 Endless patience, reassurance, and love And what does Arlo do through all of this? He keeps smiling. He remains the same goofy, joyful boy who is overjoyed to make new friends wherever he goes. His favourite things are his octopi toys (yes, he has a few!), and playing fetch with his favourite ball. Each day, while receiving his treatments, he happily snuggles beside his foster, falls asleep snoring, and rests one paw on her as if to remind her that they are in this together. Arlo loves hard, loves fully, and brings infectious happiness to everyone lucky enough to meet him. Now, this very special boy needs our community behind him.
