In this engaging and candid session, Fosam shares how an unexpected relocation from the United Kingdom to the United States ultimately transformed her from an academic researcher into the founder of a successful freelance medical writing business with a global reach. Drawing on the experiences behind her published AMWA Journal article, she reflects on the six lessons that shaped her career, from embracing uncertainty and pricing your services to building a business through reputation, protecting client confidentiality, and recognizing that self-care is essential for long-term success. BiographyHelen Fosam, PhD, is an independent medical writer with more than 23 years of experience and founder of The Edge Medical Writing, LLC. She earned her PhD in physiology from the University of Sheffield, UK, before pursuing a career in academic research and medical education. She served as a basic science researcher, faculty member, and R&amp;D Advisor at the East London and Essex Network of Researchers (ELENoR), a primary care research network established to foster an evidence-based culture within the UK National Health Service. She later transitioned to medical writing, where she now works with a diverse range of clients.Dr. Fosam joined AMWA in 2013 and later served as president of AMWA&#39;s Delaware Valley Chapter (AMWA-DVC), after co-chairing the AMWA-DVC Freelance Workshop and contributing articles to Delawriter. Her work in medical writing led her to found MiLHO (Missing Link to Improved Health Outcomes), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that develops health education resources for healthcare professionals and patients in underserved communities around the world.Drawing on more than two decades of experience as a freelance medical writer, educator, and entrepreneur, Dr. Fosam is passionate about helping medical writers build meaningful, sustainable careers while expanding access to high-quality scientific communication worldwide.
