Anakbayan Surrey is hosting a pride film screening and zine making event regarding the state of LGBTQ+ rights in the Philippines and Filipinos abroad. Monday, August 31th, 5-9 p.m.&nbsp;Solid State Community Industries, 10326 Whalley Blvd We will be watching Call Her Ganda, a documentary about Jennifer Laude, a trans woman who was killed by US Marine Corps Joseph Scott Pemberton, and the activists who sought justice for her death.Military presence in the Phillipines, especially the country side, has led to violence against not only LGBTQ+ folks, but women and children too. We will be discussing in more detail, as well as what we in the diaspora can do about it.The zine making portion of the program will follow the theme from a workshop Anakbayan BC hosted in 2024, Love and Resistance. What does &quot;Pride is a protest&quot; mean to you? Makibeki! Huwag Mashokot! -- Solid State Community Industries is close by multiple bus routes (R1, 501, 345, 321, 320) and has a few designated parking spots. &nbsp;The building is wheelchair accessible with a ramp from the parking lot next door (just south of SSCI&#39;s parking lot, with the restaurants). &nbsp;Plenty of seating! &nbsp;SSCI has a separate quiet/prayer room and the fully functional kitchen is kept Halal (bring your own ingredients &amp; clean up after yourself). &nbsp;Water, tea, coffee, and snacks are available.
