Andalus is a faith based organisation which promotes cultural understanding and social cohesion through community engagement, educational programs, and artistic initiatives, fostering a sense of belonging and shared identity among diverse groups.

We will be running a series of workshops on video filming and podcasting for children aged 12 - 16 years.

Join us on Friday 24 July 2026 for a conversation with two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist author Carla Power, who will be talking about her new book, The Lady Imam. We will be discussing the life, faith, and global impact of Amina Wadud. Please note that the perspectives, historical analyses, and narratives shared during this event are based on independent journalistic research and biographical accounts. They do not represent an official endorsement or theological stance by Andalus or the broader Islamic community. This event is intended for open academic inquiry and literary discussion. We ask all participants that will be attending to maintain a respectful and constructive dialogue throughout the session. The soul-stirring intersectional biography of the most famous Islamic woman scholar working today, from the two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist author of&nbsp;If the Oceans Were Ink&nbsp;and&nbsp;Home, Land, Security.A feminist scholar-activist, single mother of five, and queer advocate, amina wadud has led a struggle against Islam&rsquo;s patriarchal establishment that&rsquo;s been felt keenly all over the world. Like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X before her, wadud has mobilized faith&rsquo;s potential as an engine of equality. Yet this American trail-blazer&rsquo;s story has never been told in book form&mdash;until now.Born Mary Teasley, the daughter of a Methodist preacher, wadud grew up in Maryland with a rare vantage on socioeconomic divides, living through poverty and her sister&rsquo;s death from an illegal abortion. A gifted student, teenage wadud was sent to live with affluent white families in Weston, Massachusetts. After cross-country hitchhiking and a stint in a Buddhist ashram, she converted to Islam as a twenty-year-old Ivy League student.wadud devoted her life to studying the&nbsp;Qur&rsquo;an and challenged centuries of patriarchal interpretations, finding in it equality for&nbsp;all. In Manhattan in 2005, she became the world&rsquo;s most famous&mdash;and infamous&mdash;Islamic scholar when she became the first woman in 1400 years to lead men and women together in public Friday prayers.The Lady Imam chronicles the life of a singular figure not only in Islam, but also in feminism, Black history, and gender studies. With unprecedented access through years of interviews and archival research, Carla Power has written the definitive account of wadud&rsquo;s extraordinary life while shedding light on our deepest questions about faith, family, and social justice. For over 40 years Ashur Shamis was Colonel Gadaffi&#39;s enemy number one in exile with a $1m bounty on his head. His dream of a &#39;free&#39; Libya almost cost him his life and his family. Ashur&#39;s son uncovers a dangerous past and questions the choices his father made to inherit the mess Gadaffi left. Join us on Monday 22 June 2026 for a film showing of The Colonel&rsquo;s Stray Dogs and an after film discussion with Khalid and Ashur Shamis. We will be running introductory sessions, 4 x 2hr sessions, &nbsp;in Arabic Calligraphy by one of the students of the late master Calligrapher Abbas Al-Baghdadi. if you are interested in seriously wanting to take up Arabic Calligraphy and learn from someone who has studied for over 10 years with a master calligrapher, then this is for you or if you just want to try Arabic calligrapher then maybe it will be an introduction to this graceful art.&nbsp; All equipment will be provided. All are welcome to come along whether beginners or more experienced; let&#39;s add some peaceful creativity to our busy schedules.

The first Friday of every month, we aim to organise a thought provoking and reflective look at the meanings from the Qur&rsquo;an. &nbsp;Looking through the Qur&rsquo;an is an interactive session discussing the message of the Qur&rsquo;an, in English with a relevant and contemporary understanding of the Qur&rsquo;an. All are welcome to come along whether beginners or more experienced; let&#39;s add some peaceful creativity to our busy schedules. Refreshments provided.
