Botanical Belonging

Botanical Belonging reconnects people with native plants through hands-on care, education, and restoration. We grow plants, host workshops, and steward land to build a community rooted in belonging and shared responsibility.

Join us for a day of hands-on contribution and learning in support of native plants and ecological restoration!Botanical Belonging's volunteer workdays provide participants a wide range of hands-on opportunities across our demonstration gardens, grow areas, greenhouse, high tunnel, and more. Depending on the season and current needs, you might assist with:

Seed collection, processing, or cold stratification

Transplanting, propagating, or potting up plants

Organizing tools, tags, or supplies across work areas

Managing weeds or maintaining our demonstration gardens

Restocking and preparing plants for sale

Supporting native plant sales or preparing signage and materials

Whether you're looking to learn how to grow your own residential native garden, want to dig into seed-starting and plant propagation, or are working toward land restoration goals, this is a space where you'll gain real-world experience while making an impact. No experience is necessary—we'll provide guidance along the way. As a thank you, you'll be able to choose up to five native plants you pot to take home and continue growing yourself. We'll also be harvesting antioxidant-rich aronia berries, and each participant is welcome to pick up to one gallon to take home. Come ready to get your hands a little dirty, meet fellow native plant enthusiasts, and leave with new skills, new plants, and plenty of delicious berries to enjoy!

Plant Potting Party & Aronia Berry Harvest!

Join us for a truly special opportunity to explore a privately owned remnant prairie. When you step onto a remnant prairie, you’re stepping into living history. Remnant prairies are an ancient ecosystem (think 10,000 to 12,000 years) that holds diverse, deep-rooted plant communities. Finding one in as excellent shape as the one we will visit this day is heartening. Before settlement, prairie stretched across more than 170 million acres of North America—but now, less than 4% of it is left. That makes places like this rare and incredibly important. With Patti along as your guide, you'll have the chance to slow down, meet some beautiful native plants, and deepen your own connection to this rare landscape. This is an invitation to experience a deeper sense of Botanical Belonging. Registration is required. Once you sign up, you’ll receive an email with full event details. *This is an outdoor event. Walking will be on uneven, possibly muddy terrain. Thee will be no restroom facilities on the site.

Evening Walk through a High Quality Remnant Prairie

June's Nature Connections session is hosted by Botanical Belonging’s founder and native plant expert, Patti Ragsdale. This virtual gathering will focus on how thoughtful pruning can keep your native garden healthy, vibrant, and blooming all season long. We’ll walk through what to cut back, what to leave, and how a little mid-season care can make a big difference. The session will wrap up with open Q&A. Questions do not have to be limited to the topic of the night. Come ready to ask about your own gardens, plants, or anything else you’ve been curious about. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just getting started, this is a relaxed, informative way to learn from behind the scenes at Happy Apple's Farm and stay connected with other native plant lovers.
