Boulder Symphony & Music Academy’s mission is to demystify classical music and foster music education, making it relevant and accessible to people of all ages.

A drum circle is an instant rhythm experience that welcomes people of all ages and abilities&ndash;no musical experience needed! Participants sit in a circle and play drums and hand percussion instruments. As players cooperate in rhythm games, a&nbsp;group rhythm emerges.&nbsp;Moderated by a facilitator, the circle is all about&nbsp;the communal creative spirit. Drumming has various benefits, such as reducing stress, promoting relaxation, boosting the immune system, improving cognitive function, enhancing social connections, increasing creativity, promoting physical fitness, fostering a sense of community, supporting emotional well-being, improving communication skills, and encouraging mindfulness. Whether you&#39;re a seasoned musician or a beginner, participating in a drum circle can be a fun and rewarding way to improve your health, connect with others, and express yourself creatively. Tim Dabrowski will facilitate this drum circle. BSMA 7/25 Drum Circle

🎉 Join us for a flute festival! This is perfect for all levels of flute players, from those who started from yesterday to yesteryear. Join Principal Flutist from the Symphony of the Rockies in duets, trios, and all kinds of fantastic flute fun!🎉 Evelyn plays professionally and teaches in the Metro Denver area. She is currently Principal Flute with the Symphony of the Rockies (formerly the Arapahoe Philharmonic). She has a BA in Flute Performance from the UCLA School of Music and has done graduate work in Flute and Classical Accordion Performance at the University of Denver with internationally renowned accordionist Robert Davine. Evelyn was born in Glasgow, Scotland and moved to Denver at age six with her parents where her musical training began with the accordion. Soon after, she started learning the flute, which later became her primary instrument. Moving to Los Angeles with her parents, Evelyn continued her flute studies while attending high school and university. At UCLA, she studied with the principal flutist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and two different movie studio flutists. While in Los Angeles, Evelyn also played for several years with the Savoy Arts Orchestra, a Gilbert and Sullivan repertory company, the Southeast and Downey Symphony Orchestras, as well as some work in the movie studios.In addition to freelance jobs around town with other groups, she - with her husband accompanying her on electronic keyboard - entertains at assisted/independent living, memory care, and nursing facilities on both flute and accordion. Guests without tickets are welcome to enjoy the music from the surrounding park outside the fenced concert area. Please note that views of the orchestra will be very limited or unavailable, and the best sound experience is inside the ticketed concert area. Access to the reserved concert area, seating, concessions, and Rang Tang BBQ is reserved exclusively for ticket holders. We appreciate your support and look forward to celebrating with our community! BSMA 5/16 Drum Circle

Join Boulder Symphony for an unforgettable evening of heroism in the face of adversity and universal brotherhood. As we conclude our 2025-2026 season, there&rsquo;s no better way to do so than through the music of the great Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven&rsquo;s Overture to Egmont is adapted from the great poet Goethe&rsquo;s play, which tells the tale of Count Egmont&rsquo;s struggle to bring about Dutch liberation under the imperial rule of Spain. Although he is eventually executed, Egmont&rsquo;s rousing speech gains a life of its own as a triumph of the human spirit over oppression, and he is celebrated as a martyr. Beethoven&rsquo;s work combines a slow introduction with soaring melodies, eventually concluding in a bombastic &ldquo;Symphony of Victory&rdquo;, echoing the Count&rsquo;s fiery rhetoric. Local composer Holly McMahon&rsquo;s work, &ldquo;Bigfoot Steps on Boulder&rdquo;, is the perfect companion piece. Depicting the mythical creature emerging from the woods to disrupt an otherwise serene scene of butterflies and birds, McMahon imagines Bigfoot as a stand-in for the adversities in life. This world premiere also lands on McMahon&rsquo;s sister&rsquo;s birthday, and her personal motto of &ldquo;never turn back&rdquo; is imbued in the work. Beethoven&rsquo;s final symphony was also perhaps his most revolutionary, being the first to combine the orchestra with a full ensemble chorus along with four vocal soloists. In effect, it is also the work which casts the longest shadow, having haunted composers for generations since its premiere. The work moves from the turbulent, &ldquo;open fifth&rdquo; void of the first movement to the thunderous scherzo, followed by a sublime third movement. However, it is the Finale that remains a cultural touchstone, and the &ldquo;Ode to Joy&rdquo;, adapted from Friedrich Schiller&rsquo;s poem of the same name, is a call for unity and fraternity. Seldom has a work remained so important and universal, and Boulder Symphony is excited to present the piece in its entirety in the heart of Boulder. BSMA 4/18 The Shape of Sound Drum Class

As a part of our Beethoven Festival, Boulder Symphony is proud to present a chamber concert featuring a piano trio comprised of faculty from the University of Colorado Boulder. Internationally-renowned musicians&nbsp;Andrea Segar,&nbsp;Meta Weiss, and&nbsp;David Korevaar&nbsp;join to chart a course through the great composer&rsquo;s musical journey from his middle period (the &ldquo;Heroic period&rdquo;) to his late period, ultimately culminating in his magnum opus, the Ninth Symphony. Beethoven&rsquo;s&nbsp;&ldquo;Archduke&rdquo; Trio, composed for his friend and patron Archduke Rudolph of Austria, stems from the end of his middle period and features a subtle balance between humor and drama. Here, Beethoven imbues the work with some of his most elegant melodies and an especially touching slow movement, which is quickly contrasted with an especially humorous last movement, culminating in an explosive finale. The&nbsp;&ldquo;Hammerklavier&rdquo; Sonata&nbsp;has garnered a reputation for its innovative and grandiose nature, and it&rsquo;s a reputation well-earned. While the work is also dedicated to Archduke Rudolph, its scope and musical language is that of a different scale. Beethoven&rsquo;s intense obsession with the fugue is present from the first movement, and it is accompanied by an increased study of dramatic contrast. The fugal fixation makes its way back in the finale, which opens in a grand three-voice fugue. Yet despite all of the complexity of the work, its soul is perhaps found in the introspective&nbsp;Andante sostenuto, which is amongst the most emotionally-resonant slow movements ever written by the composer. Together, these works chart a path from the heroic expansiveness of the middle period to the visionary transcendence of the late. Here, we come to understand Beethoven&rsquo;s mastery of his craft, but also his grappling and desire for something greater than the confines of his craft. Unlike the balanced restraint of his contemporaries, C.P.E. Bach embraced sudden shifts in mood and jagged, rhythmic intensity, foreshadowing the Sturm und Drang of Beethoven and Mozart. Jean Sibelius&rsquo; Valse triste (literally &ldquo;Sad Waltz&rdquo;) is a masterpiece of Nordic melancholy. Depicting a dying woman who rises from her bed to dance with invisible guests, Sibelius&rsquo; work begins as a gentle, ghostly sway which builds into a feverish climax before vanishing into a chilling silence, leaving only the memory of the dance. Mozart&rsquo;s Symphony No. 39 balances classical humor with a great deal warmth, and lyricism, thanks to Mozart&rsquo;s decision to shift focus away from the traditional oboes to the clarinets, a relatively new addition to the symphony orchestra. Written during a frantic six-week period in 1788, Symphony No. 39 is the first of Mozart&rsquo;s final symphonic &ldquo;trilogy&rdquo;, and of these three final symphonies, No. 39 is the most renowned for its melodic content. The Boulder Symphony unleashes the raw power of Stravinsky&rsquo;s The Rite of Spring alongside the towering virtuosity of Rachmaninoff&rsquo;s Piano Concerto No. 3 &mdash; an unforgettable night of primal rhythm, soaring lyricism, and symphonic fireworks. In addition to his own piece Tiny Tattoo, Pann will also be introducing the Rite of Spring and Rachmaninoff&rsquo;s Piano Concerto No. 3 The program begins with Mikhail Glinka&rsquo;s&nbsp;Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila, a fast, joyful curtain-raiser that has been winning over audiences for nearly two centuries. Its racing strings, sparkling orchestration, and infectious momentum helped define the sound of Russian orchestral music and opened the door for composers like Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky who would follow. Sergei Rachmaninoff&rsquo;s&nbsp;Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor&nbsp;is one of the most admired works ever written for piano and orchestra. Composed for his first American tour in 1909, it combines lyrical, song-like themes with extraordinary technical demands on the soloist. The concerto moves from quiet introspection to sweeping climaxes, creating a deeply expressive partnership between pianist and orchestra. The concerto features&nbsp;pianist Jiarui Cheng, 2024&nbsp;International Keyboard Odyssiad&reg; &amp; Festival Concerto&nbsp;Gold Medalist, in a tie with Artem Kuznetsov, and most recently seen in the 2025 Van Cliburn Competition. Carter Pann&rsquo;s&nbsp;Tiny Tattoo&nbsp;brings the program into the present day with music that is colorful, rhythmic, and full of personality. Compact and energetic, the piece shows Pann&rsquo;s knack for writing music that connects quickly and communicates directly with listeners. The concert concludes with Igor Stravinsky&rsquo;s The Rite of Spring, a work that changed the course of music when it premiered in 1913. Its pounding rhythms, biting dissonance, and raw, primal energy still feel shocking and electric today. Candlelight Strings

This two-hour session explores West African Djembe Music as a complete rhythmic ecosystem. Instead of focusing on isolated parts, we look at how the bass drums, bell, and djembe voices layer, interact, and create the larger shape of the groove. We examine the pulse, phrasing, and cycles so you can orient yourself inside the rhythm with clarity and confidence. This isn&rsquo;t rigid technique &mdash; it&rsquo;s a map for moving through the groove with awareness.&nbsp; Where Technique Meets Insight As the structure becomes clear, the rhythm starts to feel different &mdash; rolling, stretching, breathing. You begin to listen to the whole ensemble, not just your drum, noticing when the rhythm anchors, opens, or invites a response. Technique blends with intuition, and the rhythm becomes a living system rather than a sequence.&nbsp; Rhythm as Community Ensemble playing shows how groups function: each part matters, none stands alone. The groove emerges from shared timing, cooperation, and listening. Drumming becomes a model of community&mdash;balancing your voice with others, contributing without overpowering, creating one collective pulse. Rhythm as Inner Reflection The rhythmic ensemble flow often mirrors your inner world: moments of grounding, repetition, expression, tension, and release. As you sit inside the rhythm, you may notice how your mind moves like the music&mdash;steady, busy, playful, or spacious. It becomes a gentle practice of embodied self-awareness.&nbsp; A Unified Experience By blending structure, group awareness, and inner reflection, drumming becomes more than rhythm. It becomes a system you can navigate, a community you participate in, and a mirror that reflects your own internal world. This immersion isn&rsquo;t about mastering the djembe in one night &mdash; it&rsquo;s about experiencing the rhythm as a living shape that reveals itself more each time you return to it. Music Behind the Movies: The Sundance Film Festival&nbsp;offers a&nbsp;one-of-a-kind concert experience&nbsp;that brings the sound of independent cinema to life through live orchestral performance. This original program celebrates the wide range of musical voices that shape modern film storytelling. The evening features music by Lesley Barber, Emile Mosseri, Colin Stetson, Nainita Desai, and Michael Abels, alongside classical and popular works that play a central role in several of the films represented. Selections from Manchester by the Sea highlight Lesley Barber&rsquo;s original score alongside classical music by George Frideric Handel and Tomaso Albinoni, including excerpts from Handel&rsquo;s Messiah and Albinoni&rsquo;s Adagio for Strings and Organ. These works demonstrate how earlier music can be recontextualized to deepen emotional storytelling in contemporary film. Music from Minari features the film&rsquo;s composer, Emile Mosseri, who joins the orchestra live at the piano, offering audiences a rare opportunity to hear a film score performed by its creator. The program also explores darker and more experimental sound worlds, including Colin Stetson&rsquo;s unsettling music for Hereditary, as well as the intimate documentary scores of Nainita Desai for The Reason I Jump and The Deepest Breath. Music by Michael Abels adds a bold contemporary voice to the evening. Star Wars: A Symphonic Celebration

This event is an ensemble drum class midway through our eight-week djembe program. While this class is part of the djembe program, we invite anyone with some drum experience to participate! An ensemble class is highly structured and goal-oriented. In this setting, students rotate through different instruments, spending time learning the unique techniques required for each one. After gaining a basic understanding of the individual instruments, students come together to form an ensemble, where they combine the parts to create a full rhythm. This method is particularly beneficial because, in many classes, students focus heavily on studying isolated parts but rarely get the chance to experience the rhythm as a whole in a collective setting. The ensemble class bridges this gap by giving students the opportunity to hear and play all parts in unison, creating a fuller, more enriching musical experience. Season Kickoff Celebration

This fall, Boulder Symphony &amp; Music Academy and Wild Heart Dance will present a bold reimagining of Tchaikovsky&#39;s Swan Lake at Macky Auditorium. Our large-scale collaboration brings together full symphony orchestra and contemporary dance on stage, creating a unique artistic experience that neither organization could produce independently. The performance will also feature world premiere works by emerging composers affiliated with the University of Colorado Boulder School of Music as part of BSMA&rsquo;s Boulder Living Composer&rsquo;s Project, including Minoo Dixon and Aric Vyhmeister. These new works showcase Colorado&#39;s next generation of creative talent while providing meaningful opportunities for local professional musicians &amp; dancers, and audiences. This production marks the Macky Auditorium debut for both Boulder Symphony and Wild Heart Dance. More importantly, it launches what we hope will become an annual collaboration between our organizations, bringing together dance, live orchestral music, and new artistic voices in a way that is unique to Boulder and our creative artists. Boulder Symphony & Wild Heart Dance Presents: Swan Lake

Boulder Symphony performs a selection of stirring 19th-century anthems by Romantic-era composers. The first nine pieces each feature a different nationality, while the finale, Beethoven&#39;s &ldquo;Ode to Joy&rdquo; (Europe&#39;s official anthem), pays homage to the continent&#39;s motto of &ldquo;United in Diversity.&rdquo; A surprise encore then celebrates a happy cultural homecoming back in the USA. And to help make the concert an unforgettable journey, each piece is accompanied by beautiful and evocative video images from the public television series Rick Steves&rsquo; Europe. All Sales Final.

Boulder Symphony brings Joseph Haydn&#39;s magnum opus, The Creation, to life. Composed in 1797-1798, The Creationdepicts the Abrahamic creation of the world over the course of three parts. Inspired by the grand oratorios of fellow composer George Frideric Handel, Haydn combines soprano, tenor, and bass soloists, choir, and symphony orchestra along with a libretto comprised of the books of Genesis, Psalms, and John Milton&#39;s Paradise Lost. At its premier, The Creation&nbsp;broke all records at the box office, creating a sensation throughout Europe and driving up ticket costs; luckily, you won&#39;t need to fight the hordes to get tickets to Boulder Symphony&#39;s performance!
