Candlelight Strings

This two-hour session explores West African Djembe Music as a complete rhythmic ecosystem. Instead of focusing on isolated parts, we look at how the bass drums, bell, and djembe voices layer, interact, and create the larger shape of the groove. We examine the pulse, phrasing, and cycles so you can orient yourself inside the rhythm with clarity and confidence. This isn&rsquo;t rigid technique &mdash; it&rsquo;s a map for moving through the groove with awareness.&nbsp; Where Technique Meets Insight As the structure becomes clear, the rhythm starts to feel different &mdash; rolling, stretching, breathing. You begin to listen to the whole ensemble, not just your drum, noticing when the rhythm anchors, opens, or invites a response. Technique blends with intuition, and the rhythm becomes a living system rather than a sequence.&nbsp; Rhythm as Community Ensemble playing shows how groups function: each part matters, none stands alone. The groove emerges from shared timing, cooperation, and listening. Drumming becomes a model of community&mdash;balancing your voice with others, contributing without overpowering, creating one collective pulse. Rhythm as Inner Reflection The rhythmic ensemble flow often mirrors your inner world: moments of grounding, repetition, expression, tension, and release. As you sit inside the rhythm, you may notice how your mind moves like the music&mdash;steady, busy, playful, or spacious. It becomes a gentle practice of embodied self-awareness.&nbsp; A Unified Experience By blending structure, group awareness, and inner reflection, drumming becomes more than rhythm. It becomes a system you can navigate, a community you participate in, and a mirror that reflects your own internal world. This immersion isn&rsquo;t about mastering the djembe in one night &mdash; it&rsquo;s about experiencing the rhythm as a living shape that reveals itself more each time you return to it. BSMA 2/7 The Shape of Sound Drum Class

Music Behind the Movies: The Sundance Film Festival&nbsp;offers a&nbsp;one-of-a-kind concert experience&nbsp;that brings the sound of independent cinema to life through live orchestral performance. This original program celebrates the wide range of musical voices that shape modern film storytelling. The evening features music by Lesley Barber, Emile Mosseri, Colin Stetson, Nainita Desai, and Michael Abels, alongside classical and popular works that play a central role in several of the films represented. Selections from Manchester by the Sea highlight Lesley Barber&rsquo;s original score alongside classical music by George Frideric Handel and Tomaso Albinoni, including excerpts from Handel&rsquo;s Messiah and Albinoni&rsquo;s Adagio for Strings and Organ. These works demonstrate how earlier music can be recontextualized to deepen emotional storytelling in contemporary film. Music from Minari features the film&rsquo;s composer, Emile Mosseri, who joins the orchestra live at the piano, offering audiences a rare opportunity to hear a film score performed by its creator. The program also explores darker and more experimental sound worlds, including Colin Stetson&rsquo;s unsettling music for Hereditary, as well as the intimate documentary scores of Nainita Desai for The Reason I Jump and The Deepest Breath. Music by Michael Abels adds a bold contemporary voice to the evening. Iconic moments from Reservoir Dogs demonstrate how existing songs can become inseparable from cinematic identity, including Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf and Stuck in the Middle with You by Stealers Wheel. Performed by the full forces of the Boulder Symphony and members of the Boulder Symphony Chorus, this concert invites audiences to experience film music beyond the screen&mdash;where sound stands on its own as storytelling, atmosphere, and emotional force. A drum circle is an instant rhythm experience that welcomes people of all ages and abilities&ndash;no musical experience needed! Participants sit in a circle and play drums and hand percussion instruments. As players cooperate in rhythm games, a&nbsp;group rhythm emerges.&nbsp;Moderated by a facilitator, the circle is all about&nbsp;the communal creative spirit. Drumming has various benefits, such as reducing stress, promoting relaxation, boosting the immune system, improving cognitive function, enhancing social connections, increasing creativity, promoting physical fitness, fostering a sense of community, supporting emotional well-being, improving communication skills, and encouraging mindfulness. Whether you&#39;re a seasoned musician or a beginner, participating in a drum circle can be a fun and rewarding way to improve your health, connect with others, and express yourself creatively. Star Wars: A Symphonic Celebration

This event is an ensemble drum class midway through our eight-week djembe program. While this class is part of the djembe program, we invite anyone with some drum experience to participate! An ensemble class is highly structured and goal-oriented. In this setting, students rotate through different instruments, spending time learning the unique techniques required for each one. After gaining a basic understanding of the individual instruments, students come together to form an ensemble, where they combine the parts to create a full rhythm. This method is particularly beneficial because, in many classes, students focus heavily on studying isolated parts but rarely get the chance to experience the rhythm as a whole in a collective setting. The ensemble class bridges this gap by giving students the opportunity to hear and play all parts in unison, creating a fuller, more enriching musical experience. Treasure of Sound &ndash; A Musical Pirate Adventure with the Orchestra! Ahoy, mateys! Set sail on an unforgettable musical adventure with the Boulder Symphony as we search for the legendary Treasure of Sound!Two notorious pirates &ndash; the powerful Queen Ezzy and her bumbling nemesis Neckbeard the Pungent &ndash; have arrived at the orchestra, each armed with a treasure map and determined to find the prize first. Along with our fearless Conductor-Captain (who becomes more pirate-like by the minute!), the pirates and audience embark on a thrilling quest through the symphony, following musical clues that reveal where the Treasure of Sound can be found.This interactive concert is packed with swashbuckling fun, audience participation, and live orchestral favorites by Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Saint-Sa&euml;ns, and more! Kids will learn about the orchestra&#39;s instrument families while helping the pirates solve riddles and battle it out&mdash;only to discover that the real treasure is something we all create together: the music!Perfect for students, families, and adventurers of all ages.
