Carolina Migrant Network Inc

Carolina Migrant Network advocates for the rights and well-being of migrant communities in the Carolinas. They provide resources, education, and support to empower immigrants and promote just immigration policies.

Get ready for an empowering Tipsy Teach-In! We're excited to welcome the co-founders of the Carolina Migrant Network, who will be leading a discussion on IRRIRA (the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996). This landmark law reshaped U.S. immigration policy by expanding deportation measures, limiting pathways to legal relief, and increasing the long-term consequences many immigrants face today. Together, we'll explore how this legislation continues to impact immigrant communities and why understanding its effects is important. This is more than just an opportunity to learn. You'll leave with the knowledge and tools to advocate for more just policies, engage in meaningful conversations, and help spread awareness in your own community.

Tipsy Teach-In: 30 Years Without Immigration Reform: How Did We Get Here?

A Tipsy Teach-In with Dr. Caitlin Schroering Water gives life. In the hands of corporations and empires, it can also take it. Join us for an evening of drinks, conversation, and big ideas with Dr. Caitlin Schroering, who has spent years alongside frontline movements fighting for water, land, and dignity, from Brazil to right here in the Carolinas. Dr. Schroering is an assistant professor in the Department of Global Studies and affiliate faculty in Sociology and Latin American Studies at UNC Charlotte. Her research focuses on environmental sociology, water justice, resource conflicts, and transnational social movements. She comes to academia from over 20 years of community, political, environmental, and labor organizing. Her 2024 book, Global Solidarities Against Water Grabbing: Without Water, We Have Nothing (Manchester University Press), draws on fieldwork with movements resisting water grabbing in Brazil and the United States. In this conversation, she'll share lessons from her work with Brazil's Movement of People Affected by Dams (MAB) and her time at the People's Summit in Belém during COP30. We'll explore:

Why climate change is a justice issue, and why not everyone is affected equally

How communities respond to disaster with solidarity, not charity, building "a circle, not a line"

What it means to organize locally while connecting to global struggles

How movements, from Brazil to Charlotte, are building the world we want right now

Whether you're a longtime organizer, a curious newcomer, or just looking for hope and community in hard times, you're welcome here. Your ticket supports Carolina Migrant Network. Tipsy Teach-Ins are a grassroots fundraising series bringing professors from across the Carolinas together with community for justice-centered conversations over drinks. Every ticket helps sustain our work and build power for a more just and liberated South. Our liberation is interconnected. Let's build it together.
