"Introduction to Hand Sewing" with @toofbush (Paul Chevallier)
A Slow Fashion Day Workshop hosted by @toofbush (Paul Chevallier)"Introduction to Hand Sewing"For the past 150 years, “making clothes” has somewhat implied the use of a sewing machine. For 14,000 years before that, your tools were much simpler:1. A needle, and2. Thread. In this workshop, we are going to cover the basics of embroidery, the historical and cultural backgrounds of mending practices like sashiko and kantha, and a smattering of extra stitches to populate your sewing and mending toolkit. After 90 minutes together, my goal is for you to leave completely comfortable with the idea of adding thread to fabric. If your sweater has a hole, if a seam splits on your shirt, if you’ve got clothes in your closet that could use a touch of embellishment… you will have the supplies and knowledge necessary to give your garments life.On the topic of supplies, everything you need to sew will be provided. Our canvas for the day will be a tote bag; after practicing stitches on some test swatches, I want you to leave with something functional that is also a place to exercise some sewing and embroidery. I am making these beforehand but we will be adorning, patching, and experimenting on these together. You do NOT need any sewing/crafting background to attend. This is beginner friendly! If you DO have a sewing/crafting background, there’s always a chance you might learn something new… and, you’ll be getting a tote bag out of it, which is a fun reason to come in itself. And thank you for coming! Very excited (:A NOTE ON MENDING:If you have a garment that is in need of some repair, please feel free to bring it and I will help you treat it with the appropriate mending technique after powering through my prepared curriculum. I honestly would like to be able to do a mending workshop, but I also want everyone to be able to participate equally in any workshop I do, and that’s not realistic if every person brings in their own completely different problem that requires a completely different solution. That’s why our elected approach will be to establish a strong foundational understanding of working with textiles and thread as a general practice, so when it comes time for you to learn a particular repair technique, you’ve already got a robust base upon which to impress specifics. @toofbush Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/toofbush/?hl=en@toofbush Website: https://www.toofbush.com/@toofbush YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@toofbush
