Dirt Frequencies @ Soup & Sound: a deep dive into soiled sounds with Tessa Brinckman, Scott L. Miller, and Jane Rigler

The Dance Clarinets—an ensemble of a dozen clarinets of all shapes and sizes plus drums, ledby J. D. Parran—performs a music from the Ragtime era by the seminal bandleader, unionorganizer, and advocate of African-American music and culture, James Reese Europe. A set ofmusic with clarinets and a jazz rhythm section follows the large ensemble. Europe was the musical director for the 369 th Infantry Brigade, an all African-American andPuerto Rican military unit that was sent to the front lines in France at the end of World War Iand that became the single most decorated unit of the war, that never lost a battle, and thatwas nicknamed “the Harlem Hellfighters” for their ferocity. They revolutionized music bypresenting an African-diasporic revisioning of marching band music that amazed Europeanaudiences and that provided a link between marching band music and jazz big band music.

Continuum Culture & Arts and the Greenwich House Music School Present: Jason Kao Hwang's Human Rites Trio: CD Release Performance JASON KAO HWANG violin KEN FILIANO bass ANDREW DRURY drums Violinist Jason Kao Hwang, bassist Ken Filiano, and drummer-percussionist Andrew Drury all have strong reputations as fearless improvisers who are not shy to stretch themselves. They have performed together in a variety of settings over the past two decades but it is as a separate unit that they particularly shine. They were heard in prime form on their previous release, Human Rites Trio. For their second CD, the trio performs four extended compositions by Jason Kao Hwang. For this colorful and continually intriguing program, in addition to the violin and bass (with Filiano sometimes playing bowed solos), Drury not only is heard on drums but on a wide assortment of percussion which includes gongs, aluminum pots, stainless steel bowls, a Tibetan prayer bowl, various bells and shells, and a sink faucet escutcheon. This concert is part of IN MOTION a 4-concert, musical mini-festival Nov 18 - 24 Celebrating the School's transition to new spaces and saying goodbye to the historic Performance Hall. The other performances are: Nov 18 Dance Clarinets - Directed by JD Parran - Free event Nov 19 BFA Trio (Sam Barfield / Joe Fonda / Barry Altschul) - CD release celebration Nov 24 GHMS Vocal Ensemble recital - Free event Thank you for supporting our mission, your support is invaluable.
