Docomomo US/WEWA advocates for the preservation and appreciation of modern architecture and design. They engage the community through tours, events, and educational initiatives to ensure the legacy of mid-century modernism is recognized and protected.

Docomomo US/WEWA celebrates Freeway Park&rsquo;s 50th year with a guided walking tour on September 15. Presented in partnership with Freeway Park Association (FPA) and Historical Research Associates (HRA), the tour will highlight the history and architectural significance of this masterpiece of landscape design. You&rsquo;ll learn about preservation efforts, why Freeway Park is important today, and what this space can become. The tour will be co-led by Riisa Conklin (Executive Director of FPA) and Chrisanne Beckner (HRA). The tour duration is about 90 minutes; we&rsquo;ll cover a good portion of the park. This walking tour has limited space to maximize the experience. We expect to sell out quickly. Online tickets ($10 per person) will be available starting at NOON (PST) on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Once the tour sells out, registration will close. No ticket sales at the park the day of the tour.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; About Freeway ParkThe 5.2-acre Freeway Park was opened on July 4, 1976 as the world&rsquo;s first park built over an active highway, reconnecting First Hill and downtown. It was designed by Lawrence Halprin &amp; Associates under the design direction of Angela Danadjieva who creatively transformed the airspace above Interstate 5 into a brutalist oasis of landscape, concrete canyons, and waterfalls. In 2019, the park was listed in the National Register of Historic Places and on July 6, 2022, it was unanimously designated as a Seattle Landmark.

Freeway Park at 50: A Walking Tour

Join Docomomo US/WEWA on Saturday, August 15, 2026 for a talk + tour of the Japanese Presbyterian Church in Seattle&#39;s north Rainier Valley area (1801 24th Ave S, Seattle, WA 98144). Built in 1963 and designed by the prominent Seattle architecture firm of Kirk, Wallace, McKinley &amp; Associates, the shape of the sanctuary was intended to be reminiscent of the Ark of the Covenant, and the entire building suggested the form of someone kneeling in prayer (dedication booklet, 1963). The church was inspired by recent projects of the firm which featured post and beam and wood joinery, a design approach similarly aligned with traditional Japanese architecture. Our program includes a talk about the architecture and significance of this modern sacred space. We&rsquo;ll tour the building after. Check-in at 10 am; program begins shortly after. The event will end by 11:30 am or earlier.&nbsp; COST:&nbsp;$5 per person*Advance online registration through Zeffy is required. Modern Sacred Spaces: Japanese Presbyterian Church

Join Docomomo US/WEWA for a tour (open house format) of the Glickman House, designed by architect Ralph Anderson in 1959. The house was completed in 1960 and custom built for Harry and Jeannette Glickman and their family. Set above a ravine on a wooded site in Seattle&rsquo;s Wedgwood neighborhood, the residence appears as a piece of cedar-clad sculpture in a natural setting. We toured this wonderful mid-century modern residence in 2011 and the current owners have graciously agreed to open up their home again 15 years later. Exterior photographs only.
