East St. Louis Historical Society

The East St. Louis Historical Society preserves and promotes the rich history and cultural heritage of East St. Louis through education, research, and community engagement, fostering pride and awareness in the local history.

Please join us at the ESTL Public Library for a powerful presentation by Dr. Renatto V. Carr, public historian and lecturer at SIUE. He will share his groundbreaking research on the lynching of James Edward Person in Southern Illinois. Mr. Person's 1942 lynching stands as one of the earliest twentieth-century lynchings outside the South in which federal authorities indicted and convicted white perpetrators for violating the civil rights of a Black man, making the case one of profound historical significance. Come hear this important part of Illinois history. Event hosted by the East St. Louis Library and the East St. Louis Historical Society.

History Talk-- Democracy will not Come: The 1942 Lynching of James Person

The ESTL Historical Society is looking to raise significant funds over the remainder of 2026, starting on August 15! These funds will help us find a permanent home for our work and our museum. The historic 1886 Lincoln School building is available--and with your support can become the new home of the ESTL Historical Society! Please choose a level of giving and make our dream a reality!
