THE RIGHT TO WRITE A Literary Benefit for Freedom of Expression Saturday, September 19, 2026 | 6:00&ndash;9:00 PMRecirculation | Word Up Community Bookshop876 Riverside Drive, New York, NY 10032 Join writer, producer, playwright, and teaching artist Alicia Anabel Santos for an intimate evening of poetry, literature, music, art, conversation, and community. In December 2025, Alicia was arrested in the Dominican Republic in connection with the publication of P&aacute;jaros, lesbianas y queers &iexcl;a volar!, an anthology she co-edited. She continues to face legal proceedings in the Dominican Republic and will return there immediately following this event. THE RIGHT TO WRITE is a benefit supporting Alicia&rsquo;s ongoing legal defense and related expenses&mdash;but it is also a larger gathering around the fundamental freedom to write, speak, create, and tell our stories. The evening will feature: 🕊️ Literary performances by writers and poets🕊️ A conversation on freedom of expression, art, and censorship🕊️ A silent auction featuring art, books, experiences, and writer offerings🕊️ Music, cocktails, and community🕊️ An opportunity to gather with the writers, artists, elders, students, and community members who have been part of Alicia&rsquo;s work over the years Fundraising Goal: $25,000 Every ticket, donation, auction purchase, and act of support helps.
