Ina May Wool will sing and play guitar in a concert set of her original tunes at the beautiful Lakeside Pavilion at Graylag Nature Preserve. Concert: Ina May Wool

Create a unique landscape by &ldquo;painting&rdquo; with textures!&nbsp; Students will start with exploratory exercises in mark making and expressive color. The class will look at examples of selective color and composition before using a stress-free method to sketch their own unique landscape from a photograph. By the end of class, students will have a finished, or mostly finished, 8x8 inch piece. Students may bring a printed photo of a landscape they would like to work on, or use a provided one. All other materials are provided. Students will primarily use the provided watercolors and colored pencils, but are welcome to bring any supplemental materials that will work on a paper surface.

Painting Landscapes with Textures

This is a hands-on walking and writing workshop, which inspires participants to slow down, experience nature as a catalyst for meditating on ourselves and our human community as poets and writers have done for years. We will begin by enjoying some familiar and some contemporary writers who have used Nature as a centerpiece in their writing. Then we will take a walk along a trail. While walking each participant will find a place they are &ldquo;drawn&rdquo; to and settle into that place to write for an hour with prompts to get us thinking and writing. At the end of that hour, we will gather back together and share our writing and/or thoughts on the experience.&nbsp;As Emerson says, &quot;The whole of nature is a metaphor of the human mind&quot;. The goal of this workshop is to tap into Nature as that great metaphor. To experience Nature in such a way that we can translate it into words to enrich our and others&rsquo; lives. This workshop will hopefully encourage us to look closer, put into words what we see and experience, and begin to create a poem, flash fiction piece, or flash memoir piece with our experience. If folks are interested in doing a public reading of their work at another date we can also discuss that at the end of our session. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Walking with Nature Workshop

In this engaging workshop, participants will create unique, one-of-a-kind monotype prints using oilpaint on Plexiglass. You will learn the fundamentals of this medium and discover how to printwithout a printing press by using common household items. The session will begin with a livedemonstration of these techniques. There will be photo reference available but Participants areencouraged to bring images for inspiration.Please note that we will be working with oil paint and odorless mineral spirits, so participants areencouraged to bring an apron and rubber gloves.

Monotype Printmaking Demonstration and Workshop

In this workshop, after a brief reading and introduction, participants will be invited to share one of their own ancestral origin stories or a cultural story about land (e.g., passed on orally, in writing, in films). We will talk about lessons our inherited stories normalize: What do they teach is &ldquo;beautiful,&rdquo; &ldquo;virtuous,&rdquo; or &ldquo;true&rdquo;? When a story is taken as &ldquo;common sense,&rdquo; who or what may be recognized and/or silenced, even unintentionally? How can noticing incommensurability between story lineages help move people into alliances or kinship?&nbsp; Participants will be invited to revisit their inherited story through a writing exercise, perhaps crafting a dialogue with someone else in the room, retelling their story to a young child, or ruminating in a letter to a responsible ancestor. Time will be allowed for volunteers to read aloud from their new compositions.

Detangling Some Ancestral Stories: A Creative Writing Workshop

Slow down. Notice more. Let curiosity lead the way.In a world that moves too fast, pausing to observe a tiny mushroom, the curl of bark, or the color of changing leaves can restore your sense of wonder and wellbeing. This 3-hour workshop invites you to explore the natural world through the dual lens of artist and naturalist. Participants will learn techniques to deepen their observational skills and begin their own journaling practice. No drawing skills required!Workshop DetailsAll materials are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own sketchbook, ink pens and pencils. Dress for the outdoors and be prepared for light walking and small inclines. A blanket for each participant will be provided for sitting while journaling. Suggested additional items for your comfort: a pack-able camping chair, water, snacks, bug-spray. Appropriate for Teens 13+ and Adults
