Admired by J.S. Bach, Jan Dismas Zelenka was often referred to as the &ldquo;Czech Bach.&rdquo; Their mutual admiration and friendship are celebrated in this pairing of two lesser-known works: J.S. Bach&rsquo;s Easter Oratorio and Jan Dismas Zelenka&rsquo;s Missa Paschalis in D. Telemann himself mentions that he took Lully and Campra as his models for instrumental suites. We add orchestral movements from an opera by the famous German opera composer Reinhard Keiser, who was strongly influenced by French models as well, and a sinfonia from a Vivaldi opera. No early 18 th century composer escaped from Vivaldi&rsquo;s new and revolutionary style. It includes too many aspects… Of course visually beautiful, harmonious, and rich; with delicate body movements (as in the court dances); with a refined, well-educated and imaginative language; gently talking about love, without taking it all too seriously, more as a society game or event, but also not without depth or emotion (though mostly somehow hidden); with an artful and effortless nonchalance; without great noise or exaggerated movements; everything seeming to be part of a complex illusion, detached from the “real” world, as on a stage, where you are simultaneously spectator and actor. The great 17th-18th century composers like Lully, Campra or Rameau managed to have their music perfectly fit into this “alternative” world. No wonder that the Ballet was a favorite genre, making it possible to dream away to far countries, under the guidance of Amour or Les Plaisirs. Even if the opéra-ballet was called L’Europe Galante (Campra) or Les Indes Galantes (Rameau), the real subject is the – obviously exquisite – French taste and Galanterie. <p style="box-sizing:inherit;margin-bottom:var(--tec-spacer-3);font-size:var(--tec-font-size-4);line-height:var(--tec-line-height-2);color:rgb(20, 24, 39);font-family:proxima-nova;font-style:normal;font-variant-ligatures:normal;font-variant-caps:normal;font-weight:400;letter-spacing:normal;orphans:2;text-align:start;text-indent:0px;text-transform:none;widows:2;word-spacing:0px;-webkit-text-stroke-width:0px;white-space:normal;background-color:rgb(255, 255, 255);text-decoration-thickness:initial;text-decoration-style:initial;text-decoration-color:initial;margin-top:0px">Campra will let us travel from France to Spain, Italy, and Turkey; Rameau tells us that Amour and Mars quarrel so much in Europe, that Amour needs to escape to even further continents:Turkey, the Incas of Middle-America, Persia, and in “Les Sauvages” finally to North-America. But rest assured: Amour has the final victory! Blavet was for many years the acclaimed principal flute of the Paris opera, where for many seasons the older compositions of Lully, Campra and their followers were still performed, and where Rameau presented his masterworks. The middle movement of the concerto is a Gavotte that could come straight out of one of these operas, and in the other movements, he displays a virtuosity that his contemporaries considered elegant and “good taste” – in contrast to the Italian style which they judged exaggerated and bizarre.

Join a quartet of select musicians from the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra for an intimate evening exploring the musical dialogues of the Baroque era. This performance highlights the intricate interplay and expressive communication unique to chamber music during and around the time of J.S. Bach. Through a curated selection of trio sonatas and ensemble works, the musicians bring to life the historical &quot;art of conversation&quot; that defined the period&#39;s composition style. Experience the warmth, nuance, and collaborative spirit of these timeless masterpieces in an unforgettable setting.

The Art of Conversation: Chamber Music from Bach’s World

As this program will show, Italy is more than just Vivaldi&rsquo;s Four Seasons.&nbsp;This program reflects the great variety in Italian forms and styles in the late 17th and earlier 18th centuries. The rules weren&rsquo;t all too strict, and the terminology didn&rsquo;t matter too much: the designation sinfonia, concerto, or concerto grosso did not necessarily define the character and structure of the pieces. Compositions could have no, one, or more soloists. Some are more dance-like and were mostly intended for private entertainment and celebrations. Others are more serious, often to be performed during (long) church services. In order to reflect this variety, we decided to include Torelli, Albinoni, Locatelli, and Durante: each of them very famous in their own time, but living in the shadow of Vivaldi and Corelli today. It is up to you to discover their quality and charm!

Beyond Vivaldi: Gems of Baroque Italy

&ldquo;...things in this world that fade away and evaporate...&rdquo; &mdash; Augustine of Hippo Our program title draws from the profound words of Augustine of Hippo, who challenged listeners to look past the fleeting nature of the earthly world and focus on the eternal. The sacred music of Johann Sebastian Bach pivots nimbly between these two realms, using musical instruments as vivid metaphors to guide our spiritual compass on an earthly pilgrimage. This concert explores the ultimate highs and lows of the human experience through contrasting sonic worlds.&nbsp;

Between Temporal and Eternal Things

During the 17th and 18th centuries, both composers and their audiences were very well aware of the different national styles which thrived simultaneously in France, Germany, Italy, and England. Though there were mutual influences, mostly one could recognize a composition&rsquo;s origin, right from the very beginning of the piece. As life goes, each country and its musical language had partisans and enemies. This is how, around 1720, a very influential German theoretician defined the four national styles: the Italians love the music, the French turn music into their ma&icirc;tresse, the Germans study music and the English pay best for musicians, wherever they come from. Italian virtuosity and emotionality, French charm and elegance, German somewhat heavy seriousness, English cosmopolitanism: we let you discover and taste all of it. The mixed Italian-German-French character of De Croes&rsquo;s concerto reflects our geographical position: a small but fascinating region on the crossroads of Europe.
