Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley

The Mission of the Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley is to promote and preserve the rich heritage of local, regional and national Irish culture for future generations through educational, performance and social activities.

Dive into the heart of Irish vampire lore on Wednesday October 14 at 11 AM when local writer and musician Mark Sisti leads a discussion on Celtic myths of the undead as part of the ICC’s Lunch and Learn series. Most people are familiar with the more common creatures from Irish myth and legend: theleprechaun, the banshee, Cu Chullain. But did you know Ireland can stake a legitimate claim tobe the birthplace of vampire culture and the home of vampirism? In addition to being the birthplace of the two most famous vampire novels in history, tales of the undead are deeply rooted in centuriesof Celtic mythology, blending sorcery, bloodlust, and the eerie ambiance of the Emerald Isle. Irish vampire lore is a haunting tapestry woven from ancient Celtic beliefs, chilling folktales, and supernatural creatures that stalk the misty landscapes of Ireland.

If you missed them when they were here in 2023 now is your chance to catch them; and if you saw them in 2023 you certainly won't want to miss seeing them again. Chris and Máire have performed at nearly two thousand venues large and small throughout the world. Máire is one of Ireland’s most influential traditional musicians, described by the late Derek Bell of the Chieftains as “the most interesting and original player of the Irish harp today”. Chris is an entirely self-taught virtuoso who's been obsessed with the guitar since the age of four. At fourteen he played his first paid gig in a folk club. He met the great swing guitarist Diz Disley in his late teens and played with him the length and breadth of the UK. Tickets, $25, are available here or at the Five Points Public House. Tickets are free for Children 12 and Under. Any questions, call and leave a message at 315-733-4228 Ext 6. This concert is proudly sponsored by Craobh Dugan-O'Looney.

Charles Thomson was a native of County Londonderry who arrived as a fatherless and penniless boy and went on to become the Secretary of the Continental Congress. Join us for a special panel conversation with participants of Project Children's summer internship program. At this event, the interns, their host families, and employers will speak on their various experiences with Project Children programs and how Project Children has impacted their lives. The program will be hosted by Pat Costello who has spent many years as an Upstate NY coordinator for this wonderful program. It was 1975, brothers Patrick and Denis Mulcahy, emigres from County Cork and members of the New York Police Department, grew tired of seeing the sectarian violence in Northern Ireland reported on the nightly news and decided to take action. They reasoned that if Protestant and Catholic children could spend time together in an environment that was not toxic with war, they would be less likely as adults to hurl bombs at each other, and Project Children was born. That first summer, they brought six children, three Protestant and three Catholic, to spend the summer in New York State. Over the next 40 years, Project Children would go on to impact the lives of over 23,000 Catholic and Protestant children, showing them that a non-violent life was possible and how tolerance, understanding and communication can lead to life-long friendships. Though the summer children’s program ended in 2015, the Project Children internship program, started in 1995, continues. Each summer several college-age young adults spend several weeks in the United States as interns in their future professions as well as volunteering within their host communities. This year our area is lucky to have four such interns. The program is free to attend. To ensure we have adequate seating please register here or leave a message at (315) 733-4228, Ext 6. The Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley is located at 623 Columbia St, Utica. All are welcome to attend this program and the museum is wheelchair accessible.

Come celebrate National Potato Lover’s Month at the Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley with its highly acclaimed Lunch & Learn series on 11 AM Wed Feb 11, 2026. Did you know that a potato developed in Utica in the 1840s helped save the world from malnutrition and starvation? This remarkable achievement not only transformed agriculture but also nourished countless lives. Join us for "Potato Mania: Utica’s Potato Connection" with Patrick Reynolds, Director of Public Programs at the Oneida County History Center. Potato snacks will be served. Often overlooked in history, Reverend Chauncey Goodrich is known as “the patron saint of potatoes.” Goodrich was chaplain at the Utica Lunatic Asylum and an amateur botanist. When the Great Potato Famine began, he developed a blight-resistant potato, called the Garnet Chili. This spud went on to become the most important potato ever created and is the genetic parent of most commercially grown potatoes today. Goodrich believed that potatoes had lost their vigor and were weakened by years of inbreeding. To address these issues, he obtained seed potatoes from South America and began crossbreeding them with local varieties. After years of research and thousands of plant trials he developed several strains that were resistant to the devastating blight. Goodrich gave his new varieties to farmers virtually for free. One farmer who received the Garnet Chili variety was Albert Breese of Vermont, who soon after developed a new variety, the Early Rose, in 1861. Luther Burbank crossbred the potatoes yet again, developing the Burbank Russet potato in 1872. This variety is now the most popular worldwide and is used to make french fries.
Patrick Reynolds is the Director of Public Programs at the Oneida County History Center. He holds an M.A. in Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program and has worked in large and small museums across the nation, and loves potatoes. Our afternoon session starts at 1 PM when attendees will make all occasion or holiday themed greeting cards decorated Celtic designs. Herkimer artisan Jill Rae Venerra will be on hand to lead this program. Jill is the owner of Easels on the Gogh, a full service mobile painting studio, and Jill Rae Signs. She has a degree in Fine Arts and Art Therapy. Easels on the Gogh hosts parties for adults, children, schools, colleges, and nursing homes. Everything you will need for your creation will be supplied. With Jill, Everyone is an Artist! All supplies will be provided, all they need is their imagination and enthusiasm. There is no charge for these classes, which is being offered to children of all ethnicities aged 8-14.
