Italian American Museum

The Italian American Museum celebrates and preserves Italian American heritage through exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural events, fostering understanding and appreciation of the contributions of Italian Americans to the United States.

The Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra (BMO), one of five musical groups in the Bloomfield Federation of Music in New Jersey, is a not-for-profit plectrum orchestra that consists of mandolins, a bandurria, mandolas, a laud, a mandocello, guitars and bass. The BMO invites you to attend a concert of the orchestra&rsquo;s favorite international repertoire from Italy, Ireland, the Philippines, Albania, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela and Classical music on Saturday, May 16th at the Italian American Museum. The performance will feature the conductor, Enrico Granafei, on vocals. Ticket price includes admission to the Museum&#39;s current exhibitions, &quot;Tot&ograve; and his Naples: An exhibition celebrating the life of Italy&rsquo;s most prolific comedic actors in celebration of the 2,500th Anniversary of the founding of the city of Naples, Italy&quot;, &quot;Sicilian Theater in Little Italy: The Return of the Manteo Puppets&quot; and &quot;Goodnight, Maria: A Tribute to all the women who worked tirelessly in the garment industry to live the American dream&quot;.

Filmmaker and author Don Capria presents a reading and discussion based on his book, Colombo: The Unsolved Murder, the acclaimed true-crime biography of mob icon Joe Colombo. His work explores crime, identity, and American subcultures through both documentary and narrative storytelling. &nbsp; About the Book: Anyone familiar with the history of organized crime knows the names: Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese, Lucchese and Colombo. There have been volumes written about that period, some accurate, some not at all. Anthony Colombo, the son of Joseph Colombo Sr., one of those reputed &ldquo;crime bosses&rdquo; , has written, along with filmmaker and author Don Capria, what he hopes will be the final word on that turbulent time, the role his father played and finally, the true details of his murder. In &ldquo;Colombo: The Unsolved Murder&rdquo;, the authors look to do more than set the record straight&hellip;&ldquo;My father, Joseph Colombo Sr., was labeled the boss of one of the most notorious crime families in New York&rsquo;s history. Every news article, magazine article, and every book that references him repeats with little detail this as fact. Who my father really was, and who was truly responsible for his death has always been shrouded in mystery&rsquo;&rsquo; Colombo said. &ldquo;Not to me though, as I know the truth of who he was, what he meant to the Italian-American community, and who should be held accountable for his tragic demise&rdquo; he continued.&nbsp;On June 28th, 1971, Joseph Colombo Sr was shot and mortally wounded leading the Italian Unity Day rally in Columbus Circle. Now over 40 years later, his son and confidant tells the truth surrounding the shooting, the on-going wars with Joey Gallo and his crew, his father&rsquo;s formation of the Italian-American Civil Rights League, and Colombo Sr consulting on The Godfather. About the Author: Don Capria is the author of Colombo: The Unsolved Murder, a deeply researched true-crime biography exploring the life and legacy of Joe Colombo and the cultural moment that surrounded him. Through a blend of historical detail and cinematic storytelling, Capria examines power, myth, and Italian American identity in mid-century New York. A filmmaker as well as a writer, Capria regularly participates in readings and cultural events, offering insight into crime history, storytelling, and the Italian American experience.

Book presentation and talk by novelist Ryan Byrnes, winner of the 2020 Independent Publisher Book Award. About the book: A Love Story of Italian Immigrants, reaching from Brooklyn to Sicily to Tunisia, from the Great War to the Great Depression.In 1912, after barely medicating herself against a near-fatal asthma attack, Sicilian emigrant Anna Di Nicola reluctantly leaves her family&rsquo;s Brooklyn tenement to seek a cure in the balmy climate of Tunisia. She is one of the few American immigrants to return to the Old World. In Tunisia, she detests how her asthma renders her dependent on her aunt, so she works for independence by learning to weave traditional wedding shawls for the Sephardic Jewish community. However, her apprenticeship comes with an expectation that she will marry her mentor&rsquo;s son while her heart lies with someone else. Antonio Orlando, a Sicilian native, dreams of working in his father&rsquo;s barber shop. However, mafia shootings force his father to close the shop and emigrate to America, abandoning Antonio in the Old World. To avoid slavery under the mafia, Antonio moves in with his uncle, a barber in Tunisia. Antonio swears he will one day return to Sicily and rebuild his family&rsquo;s barber shop, hoping it will inspire his father to return. He befriends Anna during her regular haircuts and begins to wonder if home is not a place but rather a person. When he accepts a betrothal to his cousin that would enable him to return to Sicily, Antonio must choose between his duty to family and his heart. About the author: Ryan Byrnes is the great grandson of Italian immigrants Anna Di Nicola and Antonio Orlando. His previous novel Royal Beauty Bright won a gold medal in the 2020 Independent Publisher Book Awards, and his fiction has been published in Italian America, December, Pembroke, Sixfold, and more. He is a book editor at Springer Nature in New York City.
