Deisel-Powered Vaccine Campaign to Save Kittens Lives
Science is clear: vaccines offer protection from infectious diseases. The right vaccines, given at the right time, reduce suffering and save livesWhen Kotor Kitties first started as the US nonprofit, the cost of FVRCP vaccine —which protects cats from Feline Rhinotracheitis Virus, Calici Virus, and Panleukopenia—was prohibitive. Our intention was to find a legal supply of the vaccine we needed at a cost that made sense in our overall budget. It wasn’t a question of if we would provide vaccine, but when we could purchase it legally and affordably, and we had a relatively stable budget.Diesel's Story:In November, 2021, a lovely Kotor Kitties supporter named Eva visited Kotor. As happens to so many, she found an abandoned kitten in need of some TLC, She named him Diesel because he was covered in grease. When she left Kotor, Diesel was left in the care of Danijela and the Stari Grad colony. His became visibly sicker and weaker, so volunteers Caren and Kenric took him to the vet and took over as foster parents. The diagnosis was panleukopenia. It's a highly infectious disease that is often fatal in kittens. It is preventable, or at least more survivable, with a simple vaccine that is commonly given to kittens in the US, UK, and EU.Little Deisel was well-loved and well-cared for. Our wonderful vet, a deeply religious husband and father of small children, treated him at home on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. But the panleukokemia virus overame his little body and he died despite the loving care he received.Wanting to make sense of Diesel's death, and that of so many other kittens in Montenegro, we started fundraising for vaccines. We have targeted their use carefully, and have begun to add them to our spay-neuter protocol for younger cats. In 2024 we are also adding a rabies vaccine for kittens over 3 months old when sterilized.
