Leech Lake Legacy

Leech Lake Legacy is an animal welfare organization that empowers Native American communities to enrich the lives of animals by providing resources and sharing information.

Bertha and Trooper are 2017 Ford 350 cargo vans we acquired used over the years and put through their paces with weekly transports and frequent donation pickups. &nbsp;The cargo they carry is precious to us and we want to ensure the safety and comfort of the thousands of critters we help to get to new homes each year. These days, Philip is driving&nbsp;Bertha, who clocks in at over 213,000 miles, and Jenny is driving Trooper, who clocks in at over 148,000 miles. &nbsp;Both vans experience a lot of wear and tear and require a lot of preventative maintenance, so much so that one (namely Bertha) will need to be replaced sooner rather than later. &nbsp;In fact, so far this year Bertha blew a radiator hose while on transport, and just a few weeks later, one of her door handles came off in Philip&#39;s hand. &nbsp;So she&#39;s dropping a few hints that here time is up soon. New-ish, low-mileage cargo vans are hard to come by, and we think it could cost upwards of $60,000 (including necessary modifications), but GOOD NEWS: &nbsp;a generous donor has pledged a $30,000 matching grant, so we&#39;re halfway there already! &nbsp;Any funds raised over the cost of a new-ish, low-mileage cargo van will be used to help cover the additional insurance costs and ongoing maintenance needs of all our cargo vans. Month after month, without fail, the bills come in and need to be paid. &nbsp;The Operating Fund pays bills like utilities, insurance, transport van repairs, maintenance, and fuel, and the salary and payroll taxes for our Program Director. When you give to the Operating Fund, you help us to deliver our programs by removing some of the stress about where the money will come from to pay the next month&#39;s bills&nbsp;and allows us to focus on our Placement &amp; Transport, Spay/Neuter, and Wellness programs.

Your gift helps finish our surgery suite so more pets on Leech Lake Reservation can receive safe, low-cost spay/neuter. 🐾 With a fully built-out and equipped space, our veterinarians and volunteers can treat more animals close to home&mdash;reducing litters, easing preventable suffering, and supporting families who love their pets. &nbsp;Funds from our Babinski Foundation grant did not stretch as far as we planned. &nbsp;Higher-than-exected construction costs and difficulty securing contractors has left our surgery suite uncompleted. &nbsp;While we were able to functionally complete our new building and prepare the old building auditorium space, the surgery suite remains a shell. &nbsp;The Babinski Foundation grant funds left are not sufficient to complete the HVAC, electrical, and plumbing work in the space behind the two doorways in this photo. Every contribution moves us closer to opening the doors of this surgery suite and giving pets the care they deserve. ❤️
