Legacy Fund For The Environment

The Legacy Fund for the Environment empowers citizens to use legal actions to protect local ecosystems, biodiversity, and rights against uncontrolled development, promoting sustainable urban planning and conservation efforts.

Join the Legacy Fund for the Environment and guest speaker Dr. Jochen Jaeger for a webinar on how and why Montreal's urban sprawl goes against our goal of a sustainable city — and how smart urban planning can still help us achieve that goal. 🧠 Abstract: Urban sprawl in Montreal has increased dramatically over the last 70 years, outpacing population growth and resulting in soil sealing, habitat loss, increased car dependency, and higher greenhouse gas emissions. Urban sprawl is the opposite of sustainability. Because traditional planning has been ineffective, this presentation proposes a framework of specific targets and limits to urban sprawl for Montreal to guide future development. By comparing seven scenarios for Montreal through 2070, the research identifies one sustainable pathway and highlights the urgent need for a greenbelt to protect agricultural lands and natural areas and slow down sprawl. Read the paper here, see the summary by Concordia News, or reserve your spot at the webinar to learn more! 🗣 Speaker: Associate professor in the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment at Concordia University, Dr. Jochen A. G. Jaeger is interested in trans-disciplinary and holistic approaches to urban sustainability research. He received his PhD in Environmental Sciences from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich in 2000. At Concordia, his lab focuses on landscape fragmentation by roads, environmental impact assessment, and strategies for mitigating urban sprawl, such as green belts. 💌 Benefit: All proceeds from this webinar go towards the Legacy Fund for the Environment's mission to empower citizen conservationists to use legal action to defend their local ecosystems, biodiversity, and rights against unchecked development. Webinar: Targets and limits for urban sprawl in Montréal: How past mistakes can inform the future

Notre invité: Me Marc Bishai : un bio courte
Me Marc Bishai ENGLISHCitizens Defending Nature: Where to start?
A wetland or wooded area near you is threatened by a project? You want to do something about it but you don't know where to begin? While all levels of government have adopted laws and regulations to protect the environment, the destruction of the remaining natural spaces continues at an unsustainable rate. Citizens all over the province are mobilising to protect the environment. Learn what role the law plays in these situations. Mtre Marc Bishai, lawyer and litigator at the Centre québécois du droit de l’environnement since 2015, has pleaded cases in Quebec’s courts and will share some of the important lessons learned. About the Legacy Fund for the Environment: The Legacy Fund for the Environment: identifies and finances legal action undertaken by citizens’ groups in defense of Canada’s environment; promotes public knowledge and awareness of environmental laws and the legal recourses available to citizens; and raises funds to support these activities. About our speaker: Me Marc Bishai Marc Bishai obtained his Bachelor of Civil Law (LL.B.) from the University of Montreal and has been a litigation lawyer since 2007. He practiced in small-sized firms until 2012, in family law as well as civil and commercial law. During that time, he authored three articles published in Ontarian and Canadian law journals. Collecte de fonds annuelle du Legacy Fund / The Legacy Fund Annual Fundraiser

The Legacy Fund for the Environment invites you to celebrate our recent victories and meet the people leading the next ones. Citizens who defend nature in court are shaping the future of their own communities, but few have the legal expertise, scientific evidence or funding to carry a case through. The Legacy Fund for the Environment closes that gap, empowering citizen groups with the guidance, funding and expert research they need to carry a case to its conclusion. Their commitment already exists. We make sure it has a voice.
