The Lynn Hispanic Scholarship Fund (LHSF) was founded in 1991 by Maria Luz "Lucy" Tizol, who saw the need to support Latino students in Lynn pursuing higher education. What began as a small fundraiser to help a young man graduate has grown into a mission that has awarded over 300 scholarships, totaling nearly $300,000.LHSF addresses financial and structural barriers faced by first-generation and low-income Latino students, awarding annual scholarships to about 15 students, ranging from $2,000 to $5,000. In addition to scholarships, programs like the "Essentials 101" workshops guide students through the college application process. As the Latino population in Lynn grows, so does the need for LHSF's support. In 2024, scholarship applications more than doubled, and the introduction of a Spanish-language application improved accessibility. As demand rises, LHSF seeks funding to expand its programs, confident in its ability to make a lasting impact on Latino students’ educational success and the broader community.
