Naples Historical Society

LXCL:The mission of the Naples Historical Society is to promote a deeper interest in the history of Naples by preserving our historic buildings, curating historical materials, doing historical research, and offering educational presentations and programs.

Taller de Muñecas de Maíz

Kim Torpey will teach cornhusk doll-making techniques learned from her grandmother, and each participant will create their own doll made of corn husks and other natural materials, inspired by St. Brigid, Celtic icon of female independence, leadership, and creativity.&nbsp; Associated with spring, Brigid is seen as a figure of transformation and &quot;peace-weaving,&quot; holding relevance for environmental and social justice. In 2023, she became Ireland&#39;s first female patron saint honored with a national holiday. All materials provided, and feel free to bring along any special details you&#39;d like to add to your doll (dried flowers, herbs, leaves, moss, let your creativity shine!). Also on display during this event: Exhibition of artwork created by local women artists, including pieces from the historical society&#39;s archives. After registration and a presentation on the repair of historic gravestones (in the Morgan Hose Building, 22 Mill Street, Naples, NY), we will travel to Fairview Cemetery for hands-on repair of some historic headstones. Our presenter is Dave Bloom, a member of Naples Historical Society and a self-proclaimed cemetery hound who calls himself “the Gravestone Guy.” Last summer he worked with NHS Board Member Ken Poole restoring Sutton family headstones in the West Hollow Cemetery, Naples.

We will also focus on the common methods that actually damage the stones. All conservator approved chemicals, tools, and techniques for a successful “Do No Harm” cleaning will be discussed.
