DRC Membership
The Disability Rights Coalition (DRC) is a non-profit membership association that brings together people with disabilities, families, allies, community organizations, and advocates to advance the human rights of persons with disabilities. United by the principles of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, we believe every person has the right to live with dignity, exercise choice and control over their own life, and belong as a full and equal member of their community. Through advocacy, education, and collective action, the DRC works to advance equality, protect rights, and ensure the voices, choices, and lived experiences of persons with disabilities remain at the centre of decisions that affect their lives. We believe that the Human Rights Remedy is more than a legal requirement—it is an opportunity to change systems, strengthen communities, and ensure that people with disabilities can live the lives they choose. Meeting the targets of the Remedy alone is not enough. Our shared commitment is to lasting, systemic change that makes inclusion the expectation, not the exception. We recognize that meaningful change requires accountability, collaboration, and courage. It requires governments to honour their commitments, service systems to evolve, and communities to embrace inclusion and turn away from segregation and the legacy and mindset of institutionalization. It requires all of us to work together for a common purpose. As a coalition, we will monitor the implementation of the Human Rights Remedy, advocate for the changes still needed to end systemic discrimination, and support systems to change so that people with disabilities can live lives of their own choosing. We will celebrate progress, remove barriers, and remain committed to the shared values that brought us together. We recognize this as a defining moment in Nova Scotia's human rights history. While we bring different experiences, perspectives, and roles, we are united by a common truth: inclusion is a human right, not a privilege, and every person deserves the opportunity to live, contribute, and belong in community. Our unity is our strength. Our shared purpose is our guide. Together, we will continue this work until the full promise of the Human Rights Remedy is realized and every person with a disability can live with dignity, choice, and belonging.
