Nova Scotia Community Living Organizations

LXCL:NSCLO is a coalition of organizations in Nova Scotia who provide support to people with intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and/or mental health support needs. NSCLO’s fundamental values of Integrity, Person Centered Supports, Respect, Inclusion, Excellence, and Support for Members guides us in our&nbsp;mission&nbsp;to strengthen the ability of member organizations to pursue excellence in community-based services.

Suicide is preventable. Anyone can make a difference with the right tools. It can be daunting to ask someone if they&rsquo;re experiencing suicidal thoughts. Knowing how to approach the conversation and having the tools to support can give you the confidence to help someone in need. Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day suicide intervention training for anyone over the age of 18 interested in learning suicide first aid intervention skills. Trusted by professionals, approved by the World Health Organization, ASIST can be learned by anyone.

Finding Our Footing: A Day of Perspective and PossibilityWhen the ground keeps shifting, it&#39;s easy to feel unsteady. In the middle of change, many of us feel tired, stretched thin, and unsure of the path ahead. This one-day training is a chance to pause, regain your balance, and step forward with fresh perspective and renewed purpose.It&#39;s designed for front-line staff, but everyone who cares about building inclusive communities is welcome: service providers, community partners, government staff, families, and community champions. What&#39;s on the agendaWalk a Mile in My Shaky Shoes with Matthew Corkum. A PhD, alpine skier, mountain biker, and award-winning speaker with cerebral palsy, Matthew shares his lived experience growing up in rural Nova Scotia. He&#39;ll talk about the barriers he faced and how support providers can help break them down instead of building them up. His talk ends with a Q&amp;A. Social Capital &amp; How to Operationalize It with Jeff Gilbank of BC. Jeff brings decades of experience, including leading an organization through deinstitutionalization. He will show how the connections between people can become solid ground to build on, and how to move social capital from a nice idea to the cornerstone of how your organization supports people. Voices from the Path:&nbsp;Nobody knows the path better than the people travelling it. In this panel, self-advocates share their experiences of support, community, and change in their own words: what&#39;s working, where the barriers still are, and what real inclusion looks like from where they stand. Come ready to listen, learn, and ask questions. This is a chance to hear directly from the people at the heart of this work.
