A selection of strange and thrilling silent films from the depths of the Nyback Archive! Three episodes of escape artist Harry Houdini’s 1919 adventure serial film “The Master Mystery,” which pits Houdini against a criminal gang led by a mechanical monster, followed by Buster Keaton’s 1922 short film “Cops,” in which Keaton accidentally manages to get himself chased by every cop in Los Angeles. Also: wacky animation, unauthorized Chaplin impersonations, and more! Presented by Archive cataloguer Ross Tidwell and accompanied by a variety of vinyl records.

A Night of Silent Film

"Michael Roemer’s groundbreaking first feature, sensitively shot by his close collaborator Robert M. Young, is a still-resonant expression of humanity in the face of virulent prejudice. Made at the height of the civil rights movement, Nothing but a Man reveals the toll of systemic racism through its honest portrait of a southern Black railroad worker (Ivan Dixon) confronting the daily challenges of discrimination and economic precarity, as he attempts to settle down with his new wife (jazz great Abbey Lincoln) and track down his father (Julius Harris). Admired by Malcolm X and now recognized as a landmark of American cinema, this tender film grounds its social critique in characters of unforgettable complexity and truth." - Criterion Collection

Film screening with Synth Library Portland. SISTERS WITH TRANSISTORS is the remarkable untold story of electronic music’s female pioneers, composers who embraced machines and their liberating technologies to utterly transform how we produce and listen to music today. The film maps a new history of electronic music through the visionary women whose radical experimentations with machines redefined the boundaries of music, including Clara Rockmore, Daphne Oram, Bebe Barron, Pauline Oliveros, Delia Derbyshire, Maryanne Amacher, Eliane Radigue, Suzanne Ciani, and Laurie Spiegel. Sisters with Transistors is more than just the history of a music genre: it's the story of how we hear and the critical but little-known role female pioneers play in that story.

16mm Workshop

Davinci Workshop Saturdays Nov 7, 14 & 21, & Dec 5 | 2:00-5:00pm This four-week workshop is a top-to-tail introduction to DaVinci Resolve from a color grading and picture finishing perspective. You'll get a comprehensive look at each step of the picture finishing process, from picture lock through deliverables. Media and equipment are provided for hands-on practice with each stage: conforming the edit in Resolve, setting up a color science pipeline and prepping a project for grading, working with basic and advanced grading tools and techniques, and final delivery. Along the way you'll learn to navigate the Edit page, build a node structure, read scopes, output LUTs, grade day-for-night, map a 5.1 audio mix, and more. We'll also cover equipment standards and considerations for anyone looking to build out a color workspace. All skill levels are welcome, but some basic editing experience (in any software) is recommended. You're welcome to bring your own footage and use class time to work on current projects. In the final session, there will be time to screen a short excerpt of your color work.
