Nwi Learning Community Inc

NWI Learning Community is a homeschool co-op located in NW Indiana that provides classes, field trips, events, and special activities for local homeschooled children. We focus on providing engaging, interesting, and unique opportunities!

Special Visitor's Day 2026

Join us back at Plum Creek Nature Center in the Goodenow Grove Nature Preserve for one of our favorite outdoor educational field trips! There are two classes with a lunch break in between. 9:15 Arrival and Check In9:30 - 11:00 Class 111:00 - 11:30 Lunch11:30 - 1:00 Class 2 It will look a little different this year as the older kids (4th grade and up) and younger kids (K-3rd grade) will be doing separate age appropriate classes rather than our usual switch off. K-3rd Grade Animal Adaptations Challenge!Kids are challenged in the Early Learners Exercise Trail. By mimicking the behaviors of local wildlife, kids discover how adaptations help these animals survive and compare their own abilities to the animals. Incredible Insects and More!&nbsp;Explore some of the million+ insect species around the preserve! Learn their life cycles, habitats, and what makes an insect what it is. Don&#39;t forget about arachnids and crustaceans! Use nets, roll logs, and dig in leaves to catch, observe, and release native insects. 4th Grade and UpHands On Herps!Learn all about herps and come face to fact as you meet reptile residents of Plum Creek and native reptiles and amphibians living in Goodenow Grove. Wetland Wonders! Hidden beneath the surface of a pond is an abundance of life waiting to be discovered! Learn about water as a resources, and using nets and buckets you&#39;ll collect, identify, and release aquatic invertebrates.&nbsp;

Sourdough Saturday is a relaxed, hands-on gathering where we learn, bake, and share together 🥖. You&rsquo;ll see how a simple starter, flour, and time can turn into a nourishing loaf.

Lake County Solid Waste Management District will be visiting co-op after lunch to present three different programs, based on age: Ages 5-6: Litter Prevention Students take a close look at litter&mdash;where it comes from, where it goes, and how it affects our communities and environment. Through engaging activities, they practice simple ways to prevent litter and build a sense of social responsibility. Ages 7-8: Journey of Natural Resources Students follow the &ldquo;life story&rdquo; of metal, glass, paper, and plastic to discover which natural resources are needed to make everyday products. Along the way, they learn why recycling these materials is so important for conserving resources. Ages 9-11: Build a Landfill In this hands-on program, students construct a model landfill and explore each layer&rsquo;s job. Together, we learn how good landfill design helps protect groundwater and keeps our environment cleaner and safer.

Join us at the Lake County Solid Waste Management District for a lesson on Compost &amp; Food Waste! Kids will learn about food waste and strategies to reduce it, including composting and vermicomposting (worms!) through education and hands on activities. **If your child has allergies such as but not limited to trees, grass, tree nuts, or eggs please let us know so proper precautions can be taken** Kids will be divided into 2 classes for age appropriate instruction. 5-7 year olds and 8+ This is a drop off field trip and only children 5 and up are able to attend. Only 2 chaperones are permitted for each class and this is on a first come first serve basis! Drop off time is 9:50 and the class is over by 1:00. They will break for lunch so please send them with a packed lunch! &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
