Where manners matter, names deceive, and love is never quite what it seems. In fashionable Victorian England, two young gentlemen have each created secret identities to escape the obligations of polite society. Jack Worthing leads a respectable life in the country but adopts the name "Ernest" when visiting London. His friend Algernon Moncrieff soon discovers the deception and decides to embark on a bit of double-dealing himself. As both men pursue romance with the determined Gwendolen Fairfax and the spirited Cecily Cardew—who each insist they can only love a man named Ernest—the web of lies grows ever more tangled. Add the formidable Lady Bracknell, a long-lost handbag, and a series of surprising revelations, and the result is one of the funniest and most celebrated comedies in the English language.
