Remnants Thrift & Sew Inc

LXCL:Remnants Thrift &amp; Sew is a nonprofit community sewing space (and thrift store!) fostering sustainability, creativity and connection through affordable clothing and the resources to make, mend and sew. This takes the form of sewing classes, free use of the sewing space during our Open Sew hours, and free fabric and patterns available whenever we are open.

Have you ever taken your sewing machine apart? Did you know it&rsquo;s recommended that you clean and oil your machine after every project or every 3 bobbin changes? Most &lsquo;broken&rsquo; sewing machines are actually just dirty or dry machines!It can be intimidating to take your machine apart to clean it, but that&rsquo;s what this class is for! Bring your own machine or borrow one, just let us know which route you&rsquo;re taking when you purchase a ticket so we can plan accordingly.&nbsp;If you are bringing your own machine, it&rsquo;s recommended that you bring a copy of your machine&rsquo;s manual if you have it. You can usually find a copy online by searching your machine&rsquo;s make and model + &ldquo;manual.&rdquo; Tickets required for this event!What to Wear / Safety Notes: No special attire required. Machine Maintenance

Let&#39;s make one of those cute sailor hats that have been all over pinterest! This class is not for total beginners-- you need to have some experience using a machine. Learn some sewing basics! In this class we&#39;ll learn how to get sewing, and do a few simple projects so you can have the confidence to go forth into all your sewing ambitions. This class is not for learning about your machine, like threading and loading your bobbin. Intro to Sewing

Learn the basics of the sewing machine--from lingo, bobbin demystification, what proper tension means and some go to troubleshooting. You&#39;ll get to practice a bit at the end, but expect to mostly be working on things like threading etc.We have machines here for use, however if you have a machine that you plan on sewing on into the future, bring that one to work on- and, if you have the manual please bring that! *If you are bringing a machine that you just thrifted, and you&#39;re not sure if it works, we can&#39;t guarantee time trouble shooting it for you. Machine Intro

Want some guidance on mending a garment or other sewn (fabric) item? Bring your holey jeans, that shirt with a busted seam, or whatever has been sitting in your &lsquo;to mend&rsquo; basket for much too long.&nbsp;It&#39;s recommended that participants bring multiple items if possible. We can work on demo&#39;s with scrap fabric but working on an actual damaged item is often more-instructive!In this session, we will brainstorm and collaborate on the best ways to fix your item, and then execute the repair as time allows!&nbsp;What to Wear / Safety Notes: No special attire required. Seam Finishes for Beautiful GarmentsHave you sewn a garment or two but are hoping to make garments that stand up to time and the washing machine? This is the class for you. In this class we will cover the best ways to &lsquo;finish&rsquo; sewn seams in order to make them stronger and more-beautiful, even from the &lsquo;wrong&rsquo; side!As time allows, and based on students&rsquo; interest the day of the class, we will learn about and make sample swatches using:<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Pinked Seams</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Zig Zag Stitch finishing</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Serging</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">French Seams</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Flat Felled Seams</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Mock Flat Felled Seams&nbsp;</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Bias Binding</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Hong Kong Seam Finish</li></ul>Students will make sample swatches of each type of finish as time allows. Due to limited sergers, this seam finish will only be demo-d.&nbsp;This class will not teach you how to use a sewing machine or serger, so you must already know how to use a domestic sewing machine (meaning you know how to sew two pieces of fabric together with a straight stitch). Some understanding of garment construction is recommended before taking this class. Seam Finishes

Be the hero at all picnics and potlucks with this adorable pie carrier. This is a great beginner class, as the construction is mostly straight lines. The part that will take a bit of time (but will be great practice) is the quilting! Pie Carrier

You and your child learn to make a tutu with an elastic waist and tulle (net-like fabric). Materials will be supplied. Pre-registration is&nbsp;required. How to Use a Sewing Pattern

Intro to Pattern Drafting (make an elastic waist skirt)2 parts: 8/3 and 8/17 both 4-6PM (please just sign up for the Aug 10 slot)Learn how to SELF DRAFT a garment to your body&rsquo;s unique measurements! In this two-part class we will draft a basic pattern for an elastic-waist gathered skirt using our hip, waist, and inseam measurements.&nbsp;Although a basic garment, the techniques used in class will empower you to make your own clothes without buying a pattern. The first class session will focus on finding our measurements and cutting out our pattern pieces. The second session will focus on garment construction and fitting!Students should purchase a ticket before joining this class and BRING THEIR OWN MATERIALS. Machines, tools and thread are available for use in the Remnants Studio, but students should bring 2+ yards of woven fabric (no stretch or anything slippery or silky, please!), and elastic for their waistband. Elastic should be &lsquo;waistband elastic&rsquo; (flat elastic), and long enough to fit around the circumference of your waist plus a few extra inches.&nbsp;If you&rsquo;d like to make use of fabric from Remnants (on the free shelves or purchased), please arrive to class at least 20 minutes early to find your materials and check out at the register!What to Wear / Safety Notes: No special attire required. Hemming 101

Fabric Collage8/10 4-6PMMake your own custom &ldquo;fabric collage&rdquo; aka patches aka Apliqu&eacute;! Great for upcycling and visual mending, the art of Apliqu&eacute; is a fun, rewarding, expressive way to create art and use your fabric scraps.Every student will leave with a finished patch they could apply to anything their heart desires (bring the item with you and we can do it together if time allows), and the knowledge of how to make endless more creative and fun fabric &lsquo;collages.&rsquo;We will use a combination of iron-on backing and freehand quilting to create our patches. Crop Top & Pants

In this class we will make a simple, flowy dress. This class will have a few tricky moments, but overall I think is suitable for beginners (some experience useful) While the picture has a lot of patches, we can attempt a patchwork dress but I&#39;m going to dissuade everyone now from doing anything too intricate--this is a simple dress but it will take the whole 4 hours. Hemming 101 ✂️🧵 is a hands-on class where you&rsquo;ll learn how to measure, pin, and sew a simple hem! By learning basic hemming, you help keep more textiles in use and out of landfills&mdash;right in line with our mission of reuse and sustainable sewing. Register below to save your spot and bring a garment you&rsquo;d like to practice on.

Make a journal leather cover! There is no sewing involved in this project, just measuring and cutting mostly,&nbsp;but we will take some time in customizing! Bring the notebook(s) you&#39;d like to put in the cover, and if you have any charms bring those too (or old jewelry, buttons, all kinds of things can be charms!) *please note, we will be using scrap leather that is furniture grade, meaning it is not very thick or stiff.
