Schooler Institute

The Schooler Institute empowers caregivers and professionals through Trust-Based Relational Intervention® training, fostering understanding and compassion for children affected by trauma. Their mission is to create supportive environments for healing and growth.

TBRI Tuesdays is an 8-week series which offers professionals and caregivers a focused space to explore Trust-Based Relational Intervention&reg; and its impact in the home, church, small group, and classroom environments. Each session will explore Connecting, Empowering, and Correcting Principles with practical strategies you can use with children right away. By registering, you&rsquo;re joining a learning community committed to understanding the need behind behaviors and creating environments where caregivers and professionals develop a compassion lens for children and adults who have experienced trauma. Come ready to reflect, share, and apply new tools to the everyday. Participants will earn a certificate of contact hours or CEUs for counselors and social workers.

TBRI Tuesdays

The Sensory Connection brings professionals working with children and caregivers together to explore how sight, sound, touch, movement, and space shape learning. By registering, you&rsquo;ll join this informational session and meet a local Occupational Therapist to learn insight on how the brain processes our EIGHT senses. Expect practical tools you can use right away to support diverse learners in classrooms, programs, and at home. This training will be held in person at the Everts Center located in Circleville, Ohio.

What happens when we stop asking, &ldquo;How do we change the behavior?&rdquo; and begin asking, &ldquo;What happened to this person, and how can we connect?&rdquo;In The Connected Therapist, Marti Smith, an occupational therapist, takes us on a journey that blends personal experience, trauma-aware research, occupational therapy, and Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI). After discovering the work of Dr. Bruce Perry and the principles of TBRI, Marti began to see both her own family and the families she served through a new lens&mdash;one that prioritized connection, felt safety, regulation, and healing rather than simply changing behavior.This three-part book challenges us to rethink the way we understand trauma and its impact on the developing brain, the body, relationships, and sensory processing. Marti explores how adverse experiences can shape the way individuals experience and respond to the world around them, including their sensory preferences and processing abilities. Through an occupational therapy lens, she helps us consider not only what a person is doing, but why their nervous system may be responding that way.The final section moves from understanding to action, offering practical resources and strategies for selecting sensory-based interventions that support regulation, connection, and healing through meaningful activity.As we journey through this book study together, our goal is not simply to learn new strategies. It is to begin seeing people differently&mdash;to move from behavior to connection, from correction to curiosity, and from asking &ldquo;What&rsquo;s wrong?&rdquo; to asking &ldquo;What happened, what does this person need, and how can I help create safety?&rdquo;The Connected Therapist invites us to consider how our understanding of trauma can transform not only the children we work with, but the way we connect with and care for the all ages.

The Connected Therapist Virtual Book Study

The Schooler Institute is excited to invite Jomel Spurlock, a Victim Assistance Specialist (VAS) with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) to share her expertise at Ohio Christian University on November 10, 2026 at 6:00 pm. In her role, she covers the state of Ohio supporting HSI Cleveland, HSI Columbus and HSI Cincinnati offices by connecting victims with supportive resources, offering trainings to stakeholders and community members and ensuring a trauma informed/victim centered approach to cases. Jomel will be in Circleville to present Project iGuardian&reg; by Homeland Security Investigations, the primary investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security. Project iGuardian is designed to inform parents, educators, law enforcement and other trusted adults about the risks that children face in the online environment, to implement preventive strategies and how to report suspected abuse.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; This engaging presentation will cover tactics used by online predators, the growing crime of sextortion, the information devices give away, and the newest apps, online games and social networks children are using.
